News that Carrie Fisher died shocked the world a day ago following the many celebrity deaths earlier this 2016. Star Wars fans have gone to social media to mourn for their beloved Princess Leia.

Carrie Fisher has been busy this 2016 promoting her latest book, The Princess Diarist. She was in the middle of a book tour when she got ill last Friday during a flight to LA from London.

Reps of her daughter confirmed the 60-year-old actress? passing yesterday.

?It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8.55 (16:55 GMT) this morning [Tuesday],” the statement read, as reported by BBC.

Carrie Fisher?s death mourned by fans, co-workers

Star Wars fans worldwide have been expressing their condolences for the star. She was best known for originally playing Princess Leia in the hit sci-fi franchise.

Some tributes were in the form of fan art that have been shared numerous times on social media.

The statement from Fisher?s daughter was reported by BBC alongside anecdotes shared by some of Fisher?s biggest fans. Among them were Eric and Elizabeth McCabe of New York, who said they grew up watching Star Wars.

The two pointed out how the actress actually ?looked pretty good in the last movie.?

?We didn’t realize that her health was so bad,? Eric said. ?It’s really upsetting.?

Star Wars creator George Lucas described Fisher as a ?great and powerful princess? who will be greatly missed.

The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts also took to Twitter to thank the actress for her contributions to the industry.

Fisher?s Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill said the news was “downright heartbreaking.” The actor further said, “Carrie was one-of-a-kind who belonged to us all?whether she liked it or not.??

Harrison Ford described his deceased co-star as “brilliant, original, funny and emotionally fearless.?
