Late last month, fans of Gearbox Software’s Borderlands series were greeted with the reveal of a few stills showing off the engine to be used in Borderlands 3. The gaming community was ecstatic to see that the developer is already working on the third title but aside from the images, we know very little of the game. Despite the lack of details, there’s still a chance that the Borderlands 3 release date isn’t a few years off. In fact, the game could even launch as early as next year.
YouTuber LoneVaultWanderer shared his recent discovery to Borderlands’ community. He speculates that the game is already in deep in development because Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford tweeted a picture of him doing motion capture work. While it’s easy to speculate that Pitchford could be working on a different game, the picture was accompanied by this tweet: “Doing a shoot… I may or may not be a psycho bandit in a video game we may or may not be working on. Also, happy Bulletstorm launch day!”
Fans of the series can easily speculate that Pitchford is talking about doing work for Borderlands 3 in the tweet as psycho bandits are some of the staple enemies in the franchise. With motion capture work already happening, it’s very likely that we’ll get to see the Borderlands 3 release date pretty soon.
LoneVaultWanderer also speculates that since Gearbox Software is already in the process of doing motion capture work for the game, it’s very likely that the developer is already deep in development. Motion capture work is usually done when a studio is already deep into development as the actors will need to know the characters first before doing motion capture work. From the look of things, Gearbox Software may already be executing their plans for the game’s characters and story for the upcoming game.
An article from Gamasutra details when motion capture starts. “Roughly, in a 14-month development cycle, principal shooting should take place form months 4-8, with pickup shoots possible in later months,” Gamasutra wrote.
Hopefully, Gearbox Software is indeed already deep in the development of Borderlands 3. If they are, then we might know the Borderlands 3 release date as early as E3 2017. For now, all we have to do is wait patiently for more details.
