Katie Holmes stars and goes behind the camera in her directorial debut All We Had. It’s heavy drama and it was important to her that people on the set were on high spirits all the time. So she turned to her secret weapon: Beyonce.

In an interview during The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, Holmes said, “This movie it’s a mother daughter story and there’s a lot of high emotion. So you need to have some fun. So we did a lot of Drunk In Love, a lot of break dances on our set.”

Holmes emphasized that having a positive atmosphere on the set was her priority. She said they had a great time. She’s been in show business for the past 20 years. She loves being on a happy set. She loves it when people value her. And she wanted to provide that same feeling to her actors, she told Fallon.

The story is set during the worldwide financial crisis back in 2008. She plays a single mom to a teenage daughter. Both of them move to a small Midwestern town. The film is based on the novel having the same name, authored by Annie Weatherwax.

Holmes plays the role of Rita Carmichael, who will do anything she can for her and her daughter to survive. She told Good Morning America on Tuesday, “They’re survivors on the road. Sometimes Ruthie’s the mom and Rita’s the daughter and they’re like sisters sometimes and there was this Thelma and Louise quality to them and I felt like it was just a story about humanity, healing, and hopefully something that a lot of people can relate to.”

The Dawson’s Creek alum also expressed her thoughts about directing and starring in the same film. She said it was very exciting, powerful and challenging. She started preparing for the film a year before the shoot. She compiled a lot of photos for inspiration, watched a lot of movies. She also spent a lot of time assembling her team. She said the whole process was very positive and rewarding. More so because she worked with the people she loved.
