The Android game Cowboy Adventure is stealing Facenook log-ins, and has tricked 1,000,000 users ? and one of them could be you!
According to the website, Tech Times, ESET, a Slovakia-based antivirus service that published a post on Thursday, July 9, detailed how the Cowboy Adventure app on the Google Play store was able to steal personal information of the users.
And users actually gave information willingly.
“With 500,000 – 1,000,000 installs, Cowboy Adventure was a relatively popular game on the Google Play store. That popularity in itself is unremarkable: however, the developers of the app also used it as a tool to harvest Facebook credentials, and that did raise a few eyebrows,” noted ESET’s malware researchers.
The stealing is actually quite simple, and is probably why users willingly give their FB credentials. Using a fake log-in screen, users are asked to key in not just their e-mail and password, but their phone number as well.?The data was allegedly transferred to a server in Panama that belonged to the attackers.
ESET frequently scans popular apps and its engineers check-up on the apps’ computer code for the presence of any undetected malware. It was during one such routine check that Luk?? ?tefanko, ESET’s computer researcher, spotted oddities in the Cowboy Adventure game app and exploring the code revealed that it had Vietnamese text.
Interestingly, Cowboy Adventure?was not the only game, which performed similar activity. Jump Chess, downloaded by almost 5,000 Android users, was reportedly pulled down by Google Play for performing a similar modus. To date, Google has put on security measures to protect users by giving
The best way to make sure your account won?t be compromised, is to change your Facebook log-in details ASAP. Also, check if you?re using other apps that make use of your FB credentials and erase them as well.
In the future, it is also best not to give away log-in details freely. Be wary of applications that ask for similar information as well as there might be malwares hidden in their features.
