January has come and gone, but with it lies a line of notable video game titles that were released in its wake. Here are just some of the titles to be counted under the best video games 2018 list for the month of January.

Best Video Games 2018: January Edition

One of the video games that came out this January is Iconoclasts. Available on a plethora of platforms (PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, PC, Mac OS, and Linux), Iconoclasts is an action platformer video game that boasts of strong storytelling and compelling visuals. Its graphics take on a more retro feel, but it is in its narrative does Iconoclasts shine.

Players take control of a mechanic named Robin who attempts to fight back against the game’s antagonistic religious authority, the One Concern. The game manages to address emotional issues that its characters face, and it does so in a very captivating manner that shows growth from such issues.

Another notable January release is Celeste. Similar to Iconoclasts, Celeste is a retro pixel-art 2D platformer video game with an emotional story to supplement its visuals. Its charming dialogue adds more dimension to its characters. In terms of gameplay, Celeste manages to update the platformer genre with refreshing challenges that give the game more depth.

January 26 saw the release of the highly anticipated Monster Hunter: World. Being part of Capcom’s Monster Hunter franchise, Monster Hunter: World features the classic gameplay of hunting down creatures and crafting equipment.

Notably, Monster Hunter: World manages to lure in new fans thanks to its accessibility, all without taking away from the franchise’s core formula. As it was released on console platforms, gameplay and movement becomes all the more realistic and fluid. This only adds to its gaming experience, making Monster Hunter: World a definite addition to the list of best video games 2018.

January 2018 ended with a bang thanks to Square Enix’s Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. Released on the PlayStation 4, it is a follow-up to the PlayStation Portable titles Dissdia Final Fantasy and Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT sees an update in its battle system. For one, the game focuses on three-on-three combat this time around. A Summon meter also allows players to summon creatures — such as the ever popular Bahamut — to temporarily aid them in battle.

As is the case with the other Dissidia games, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is a fighting game that allows players to pick out different characters from several Final Fantasy titles as their fighters. Characters from previous Dissidia titles return for the latest entry in the series. However, the game also boasts of new fighters being added to its roster. New additions include Final Fantasy XIV’s Y’shtola Rhul, Final Fantasy XV’s Noctis Lucis Caelum, Ramza Beoulve from Final Fantasy Tactics, and Final Fantasy Type-0’s Ace.
