Torn between hitting the gym and going to the bar for a glass of beer? Don’t worry, beer yoga is now the new craze. It may sound counterproductive, but it’s actually starting to gain popularity across the globe. First enjoyed by Berlin hipsters, the trend has found its way to the Australian shores and now, other countries too. But what exactly is beer yoga?

This new fitness craze is basically combining traditional yoga poses with the art of chugging back a bottle of beer. No kidding, imagine lifting a cold brew to the heavens in a tree pose and taking a sip in a halfway lift. That’s what participants do in this class and it sure can be full of fun and laughter especially after the first gulp, but don’t let it fool you. The aim is still the same as a regular yoga session: to find inner calm and free oneself from confusion and distress.

As Berlin’s BierYoga founder and yogi Jhula says, “BeerYoga is fun but it’s no joke. We take the philosophies of yoga and pair it with the pleasure of beer-drinking to reach your highest level of consciousness.”

The practice hails originally from Germany.  Of course, it did. The place is best known for its world-class beer and serious appreciation for the brew.  It’s not a new thing though. Both beer and yoga have been around for so long, it’s nearly impossible to think no one had ever thought to mix the two before. But it’s clearly gaining popularity just recently.

Earlier this year, classes already started to pop up in Sidney, Washington, Thailand, more recently London, and soon, God willing, probably in your city too. It’s worth noting, however, that health-wise, you are better off saving that ice cold beer for the pub instead of chugging it in a pigeon pose. It’s obviously not a good replacement for water and more importantly, balancing a glass bottle while practicing complex poses is dangerous. Doing so while sober is already difficult enough, what more when you’ve had a drink?

But hey, it’s not the only rising yoga craze today. Weed yoga has somehow become a thing now too, so if you’re a beer lover who does yoga, this might just be for you.
