The Australian Boomers have never won an Olympic medal but can guarantee a spot in the medal game by beating Lithuania in the first game of the quarterfinals on Wednesday. After an incredibly successful group stage, the Aussies head into the contest confident that they can go a long way towards a first Olympic medal.
They opened their campaign with victories over France and Serbia before narrowly falling to the United States. They rebounded with comfortable wins against China and Venezuela.
The Boomers have been beaten twice by Lithuania in Olympic bronze medal matches (Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000) and must overcome the Eastern European team in their final eight clash.
On the other hand, three-time Olympics bronze medallist, Lithuania, was third in Group B. They were beaten soundly by Spain (109-59) and Croatia (90-81) in their last two matches placing them seventh overall compared to Australia?s second position.
While Lithuania lost to Spain and Croatia, it opened its campaign by beating Brazil 82-76, Nigeria 89-80 and Argentina 81-73. Still, their past with the Aussies give them a distinctive advantage as Australia will be much more cautious in the game.
However, the Australian team superbly led by NBA veterans such as Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills and Matthew Dellvedova, is the slight favorite to win the game. Australia will face the winner of Croatia v Serbia (11:45 a.m. AEST) should they prevail in the quarterfinal.
