Following months of rumors and speculations, Asus announced two new smartphones, the ZenFone AR and ZenFone 3 Zoom at CES 2017. The Asus ZenFone AR is notably the world’s first smartphone to be both Tango and Google DayDream VR ready. The ZenFone 3 Zoom, just like previous Zoom series offers a top-of-the-line camera.
Asus ZenFone AR
The Asus Zenfone AR seems more like a flagship smartphone packing in Snapdragon 821 SoC and a whopping 8GB of RAM. Other variants of the AR+VR handset will also be launched, including a model with 6GB RAM. However, with Qualcomm announcing their latest Snapdragon 835 SoC, processor for AR/VR smartphone seems outdated.
The Zenfone AR is packing a 23MP camera with the usual extra Tango sensors that provide motion tracking, depth-perception and area learning. The 23MP Sony IMX318 module comes with TriTech+ autofocus system, dual-PDAF, second-gen Laser Focus, and continuous-focus. The rear camera also supports 4-axis OIS as well as 3-axis EIS for video recording alongside support for 4K video recording.
The device sports a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED QHD (1440×2560 pixels) display, which is likely to play major role in virtual reality. The company added that the ZenFone AR packs 79 percent screen-to-body ratio. In addition, the phone boasts an external five magnet speaker that supports Hi-Res audio and DTS virtual surround sound to deliver the ultimate AR and VR experiences.
The ZenFone AR also has a fingerprint sensor on the front embedded in the home button. Also on the specs list is a 8MP front camera, 3300mAh battery, quick charging, NFC, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. For storage options, Asus has you covered with flavors in 32/64/128 or 256GB of UFS 2.0 storage plus a MicroSD slot. The smartphone ships with Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box.
Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom
The main highlight of the ZenFone 3 Zoom is a dual-camera setup on the device. On the rear, you get a 12MP Sony IMX362 sensor with 25mm wide-angle lens and f/1.7 aperture. There is ?another dedicated 12MP, 56mm lens for 2.3x optical zoom. The front facing camera is rated at 13MP.
The ZenFone 3 Zoom’s innovations don’t end with high-tech cameras. The device boasts a 5,000mAh cell has “one of the highest capacities of any smartphone”. Asus contends the battery is largest for?a smartphone this?thin and light. And it features a unique reverse-charging capability that automatically juices plugged-in devices.
The handset is designed with a sandblasted aluminum-alloy body that measures 0.31-inches thin and 0.37 lbs in weight. There is also a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor and 5.5-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) display shielded by Corning?s Gorilla Glass 5.
ZenFone 3 Zoom will be available in February 2017. The ZenFone AR will be made available in Q2 2017. Pricing of both smartphones will be announced at a later stage.
