Apple’s next-gen tablet line is much awaited and iPad Air 3, iPad Mini 5 and iPad Pro 2 are expected to launch soon. A source confirmed March 2017 launch for both the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 5. Microsoft is also said to be readying a follow-up to its successful Surface tablet with the launch of Surface Pro 5 in early 2017.
Both iPad Air 3 vs Microsoft Surface Pro 5 are the two in one tablet and PC device. While it’s been ages since last iPad Air was seen, Surface Pro 4 was launched last year. Below is the comparison between the upcoming tablets.
Apple iPad Air 3 vs Microsoft Surface 5 Processor
Apple iPad Air 3 will be powered by an A9 processor paired with 3GB RAM for faster processing and power efficiency. That’s an older-gen processor for the device as the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus features A10 Fusion. The Air series can’t possibly pack a heavier chipset and retain its slim design.
Microsoft’s upcoming Surface Pro is expected to come equipped with Intel Kaby Lake processors. There are reports about a production delay of Kaby Lake series. This could result in Microsoft resorting to older gen processors. The device will be equipped with 16GB RAM or more depending on configurations. Overall, Microsoft will trump the iPad Air 3 in terms of performance.
The iPad Air 3 is rumored to support 4K UHD display with support for 3D Touch technology. Rumors also indicate an edge to edge bezel-less display for the device. The Surface Pro 5 will feature a 4K-capable Ultra HD screen, according to China’s Economic Daily News. The typical 4K screen has a 3,840 pixels by 2,160 pixels resolution compared to the 2,736 pixels by 1,824 pixels contained in the Surface Pro 4’s 12.3-inch PixelSense display.
Microsoft is unlikely to introduce any aesthetic changes to its 2-1 tablet. In terms of display the Air 3 with its 3D Touch and Edge to Edge design will surely offer a better option for those loving thin sleek design tablet.
Apple introduced the support of its Apple Pen to iPad Pro lineup. The company will not necessarily introduce the same to iPad Air 3. The feature is expected to be retained for Apple’s top of line iPad Pro flagship.
This is a huge disadvantage to the iPad Air 3 when compared to Surface Pro 5. Similar to Surface Pro 4, the Pro 5 will come with a stylus called Surface Pen. A new patent details more changes for stylus, including a magnetic charging dock to give Surface Pen its juice.
Apple iPad Air 3 is currently target for a March 2017 launch. Apple will likely follow through with this date as it’s been three years since we last saw the Air line. Though rumors suggest an early launch for Surface Pro 5, this may not happen after all. Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is still hotly in demand and the company may choose to wait.
Overall, Apple might still introduce several innovative features to iPad Air 3. This might include the dual camera setup seen in the current iPhone 7. There is also indication of 3D functionality and bezel less display with Touch ID support embedded within screen. Microsoft instead will go with a powerful Surface Pro 5 with longer battery life and improved Surface Pen support. So in the end, both the devices are meant for different users and won’t be actually competing with each other. The Surface Pro 5 and the iPad Pro 2 in fact will the competing 2-in-1 tablets.
