Right now, millions of Android users still do not have the current Android 7.0 Nougat update. Current statistics show that Android Nougat adoption rate is around 2.4 percent. Nevertheless, this does not stop Google in developing the next line of Android operating system. In fact, the search giant is already planning on releasing the second developer’s preview of Android O sometime in May.
At the moment, Google just released the alpha version of Android O. And just like the Android Nougat, it would seem that Google will be unveiling the next Android name during this year’s IO event. Although, suffice to say, many believe that the next mobile operating system from Google will be called Android Oreo.
The upcoming Android O will include a number of new features for mobile applications. First and foremost is the new Background mode. This mode saves battery life by putting the mobile device in low power sleep mode while maintaining basic functions like cellular connectivity.
In addition to the Background mode, there are also a few tweaks done to the general interface. The App launcher will now be able to support various kinds of icons and visual effects. The notifications also received a major facelift with new channels, timeouts and dismissals. Furthermore, the Android O now includes picture-in-picture mode as well as multi-display support.
Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, the current version is still in alpha. However, for those who want to try it out, they can do so by downloading the binaries from the Android Developer repository. For the time being, only Pixel devices and some Nexus devices are entitled to the update. Anyone owning a Pixel device, including the Pixel C can get on with the update. Meanwhile, the Nexus 6P, 5X and Nexus Player are the only ones who can download the binary.
According to the Android Developers website, the Android O will be released sometime in the third quarter of 2017. The new operating system will be officially unveiled in May in California. For more updates on the Android O, be sure to check us out at TheBitbag.
