Remember AlDub? They?re the love team of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza from the Philippines that became a showbiz phenomenon and set a Twitter record for generating more than 41 million tweets during one of their best, most elaborate live episodes before a capacity crowd at the Philippine Arena?
Well, Eat Bulaga?s AlDub, which is a portmanteau of the names Alden and Yaya Dub, has a romantic movie titled Imagine You & Me that is now playing in 230 cinemas in the Philippines.
As expected, the movie grossed 21 Million Philippine peso on the its opening day, according to Imagine You & Me producer APT Entertainment.
In case you?re wondering what Imagine You & Me is, it?s a Filipino romantic-comedy movie set in picturesque Italy. Maine Mendoza, who plays Gara, is a hopeless-romantic OFW working in Italy while Alden Richards, who plays Andrew, is a good-looking fellow who lost his zest for life. As they cross paths in Italy, they start an unlikely friendship and soon find themselves in love with the place and with each other.
Some scenes were shot in Casa de Giulietta, an early 14th century house at Via Cappello no. 23 in Verona. A tourist attraction, this is where Juliet Capulet supposedly lived. Aside from Italy, AlDub also shot scenes in Canada and in the US.
Directed by Mike Tuviera, Imagine You & Me was released on July 13, just three days before Alden and Maine celebrates their first anniversary as an onscreen love team. In the Philippines, it received a B rating from the Cinema Evaluation Board of the Philippines.
As Aldub?marks its first anniversary as the one of the most sought-after tandems and top product endorsers in the Philippines, maybe it?s worth to take a look back at some of their milestones:
This is the first time Alden and Yaya Dub met through a slip-screen monitor in Eat Bulaga. As you can see, Yaya Dub was doing her Dubsmash skit when Alden?s face was flashed on the screen. The sight of Alden?s face threw Yaya Dub out of her character, which the studio-based hosts easily picked up as a sign that the real-life Maine Mendoza has a crush on Alden.
This is the first time Alden and Maine finally saw each other and came in close proximity. Their attempt to talk and hold each other?s hand was foiled by Yaya Dub?s grandma, Lola Nidora (played by comedian Wally Bayola in drag), who at that time was just teaching the two a valuable lesson about waiting for the right time. The ?right time? in Filipino is ??Tamang Panahon,? from which the Twitter history-making hashtag, #ALDubEBTamangPanahon was derived.
And here?s the history-making Sa Tamang Panahon live episode at the Philippine Arena, which has a seating capacity of 55,000.
Here?s what the jam-packed venue looked like from the crowd?s point of view:
AlDub?s Sa Tamang Panahon event was so successful that the hashtag for the day #ALDubEBTamangPanahon generated a whopping volume of 41 million tweets, from October 23 to 25. Such big news prompted Twitter Vice President of Media, Asia Pacific and Middle East Rishi Jaitly to issue a statement (and say his congratulations) about the historic event.
?The AlDub phenomenon continues to make history with a new global Twitter record by taking a love story that?s captured the imagination of people all over the world and combining it with the Tamang Panahon charity concert broadcasted live worldwide.
?We are delighted that Twitter continues to be a way for millions of Filipinos to keep up with the latest updates from news, culture and the world and share the experience with others from across the country.?
Twitter recently took part in AlDub?s first anniversary celebration by coming up with a special Twitter emoji: two hands joined together to form a heart, which is an AlDub trademark. This Twitter emoji automatically pops up everytime you use ?the hashtag #AlDub1stAnniversary. Twitter has also done it for the NBA Finals, Game of Thrones, and some DC and Marvel superhero movies.
Small wonder Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza are now the cover stars of YES! 100 Most Beautiful Stars 2016, a special edition magazine from top Philippine entertainment magazine, YES! Magazine.
From the looks of it, AlDub will make another milestone again, sooner than later.
