Age of Empires Online Officially Closes

By on

Age of Empires Online has come to an end. The end comes after more than 524 million single player quests, over 13 million multiplayer quests, 2 million arena matches, and more than 2 billion Empire Points gained.

The massively multiplayer online real time strategy game first launched for the Windows PC back in August of 2011. The model was a free to play game. The game was published by Microsoft Game Studios but development was supervised by Robot Entertainment and Gas Powered Games. When the game first launched, it only had two civilizations namely the Greeks and Egyptians. As the years went on, more civilizations got added like the Persians, the Celts, the Babylonians, and the Norse. Aside from the civilizations, new modes were added to encourage more game play.

A blog post details out how the game would like to thanks the developers as well as the Age of Empires Online players. The post reads: ?The most thanks, though, belong to you, the players of the game. It has been a pleasure and an honor serving you all. Thank you for the time you have spent with us, exploring all these little worlds together and conquering them for the glory of your Alliance and your Empire. Thank you especially for the times you spent with each other, in PVP matches, in co-op quests, and in the forums and the rest of the internet.?Thank you for playing.?

The farewell post is going to be the last post for the game and together with that, they included some great final statistics of the game.

Last August, news that the game would be facing closure first surfaced. Early in 2013, executive producer Kevin Perry announced that the game was entering a ?support phase? which would be devoid of any active development. Then at GDC Europe 2013, Perry said that the game?s lack of content doomed their freemium type of business model. The Age of Empires series is quite an old series but it has quite a good following. It seems though that Microsoft is more interested in Xbox type games so the possibility for a reboot could be slim to none.
