Aaliyah death is remembered with smiles and tears today. It’s been 15 years since R&B superstar Aaliyah’s plane crashed in the Bahamas- instantly killing her and eight of her companions. Yet, stylist and close friend to the celebrity, Derek Lee, recalls it as if it was just yesterday.
Lee was supposed to take that twin-engine Cessna 402B flight but cancelled at the last minute and decided to soak into the crystal clear waters a day longer. In an interview with CNN, Lee said, “In the beginning it was really hard to deal with, it changes every year. This year I don’t know how I am going to feel.”
Fondly known as “Baby Girl” to fans and friends alike, Aaliyah is remembered on Thursday for her 15th death anniversary.
Also remembered in the tragic incident were pilot Luis Morales III, 30; make up artist Christopher Maldonado, 32; hair stylists Anthony Dodd, 34 and Eric Foreman, 29; employees from the record label Gina Smith 29, and Douglas Kratz, 28; family friend Keith Wallace, 49; and security escort Scott Gallin, 41.
How It All Began
At the age of 22, Aaliyah Dana Haughton has already achieved so much. At 15, she took the R&B music scene by storm as singer R. Kelly’s protege. Not long after, she went on her own and her album became multi-platinum. She even tried her hands on movie stints playing memorable characters in Queen of the Damned and Romeo Must Die.
Aaliyah?s death was like a stab in the chest. Lee described the amazing singer as a deeply caring and trusting person. She always brought out the best in the people around her, never wanting to outshine anyone.
She stayed true to her core even at the peak of her successful career. She would still sit on her dad’s lap, hold her mom’s hand, and let her friends tag along during her recording sessions. All of these were fondly recalled by music producer Craig A. King. Truly, this R&B superstar with a heart of gold will forever be missed.
