The world famous swimming champion Michael Phelps will be leading as Team USA?s flag bearer in Friday night?s Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Five time Olympian, Phelps, became the second swimmer, after Gary Hall Sr. in 1976, to receive the honor of leading the United States delegation into the stadium for the opening ceremony of the Summer Games.

?I’m honored to be chosen, proud to represent the U.S., and humbled by the significance of carrying the flag and all it stands for,? Phelps said. ?For Sydney, I just wanted to make the team. For Athens, I wanted to win gold for my country. For Beijing, I wanted to do something nobody else had done. In London, I wanted to make history. And now, I want to walk in the Opening Ceremony, take it all in, represent America in the best possible way and make my family proud. This time around, it’s about so much more than medals.?

The Opening Ceremony will be held Aug. 5 at the Maracan? Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, though the competition actually started Wednesday with opening round matches in women?s football tournament.

NBC will be presenting the opening ceremony at 7:30 p.m. ET in the United States, although the ceremony kicks off at 7 p.m. in Rio. Also the ceremony will be shown live on the BBC One, with coverage beginning at 11.40pm(UK time) on Friday. You will be able to catch the live-stream of Phelp?s flag bearing moments via NBCOlympics.com and BBCOne iPlayer.

Phelps made history at the Beijing Games in 2008 when he won gold medals in eight events and added to his legacy in 2012 when he became the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 career medals, including 18 golds. Since this probably are his last games, Phelps, will look to add to his historic Olympic medal haul in 2016.

Of the 16 swimming events in Rio Olympics, Phelps is expected to swim in at least three individual events: 100m butterfly, 200 individual medley and 200 meter butterfly.
