The Wasabi 360 Ultra (phat) is a very nice product. The product works as advertised and is compatible with the latest Xbox 360 Fall 2011 dashboard update. For this review, we test drive Wasabi with firmware v1.2 beta 1 and for the installation, we followed the steps provided on “Wasabi 360 Ultra X360Phat Installation Guide v1.1”. The installation guide is a bit outdated, so we took some nice high-resolution pictures and added some notes for clarification purposes.

Physical design and quality (7/10):

The housing on Wasabi 360 Ultra (phat) is made of mostly plastic. Therefore, it is light in weight—weighing approximately 70 grams (PCB and housing). However, the plastic used for the housing doesn’t feel very durable.

Important to note: Don’t apply too much pressure on the “Select” button (see user guide). You can damage it—like us.

Setup/Installation (9.5/10):

The installation of Wasabi is extremely easy. Follow the installation guide and check out the pictures that we took for support. As long as you have your Xbox 360 drive key.bin dumped, it is as simple as placing the key.bin file inside the folder called “wasabi” (e.g. X:\wasabi\key.bin) on your external hard drive. The Wasabi firmware also goes inside this folder. The only issue we ran into is trying to connect the green and white wires to the connectors, labeled “Grn” and “Wht”, on the Wasabi PCB. The green and white cables were a bit short, making it a bit difficult to attach the cables to the connectors. We hope the Wasabi team will take this into consideration.

Note 1: You must create the “wasabi” folder on the root of your external hard drive.

Note 2: The external hard drive must be formatted as NTFS. We use an eSATA hard drive for this review.

Usability (10/10):

After the installation and firmware update, you simply place your legally backed up ISOs on the root of your external hard drive (e.g. X:\Gears_of_War_3.iso). Here’s a quick tutorial: make sure the Wasabi switch is on “Emulation Mode” (see user guide)-> power on your system->navigate to Video-> select  “Mixed Media Disc”->Current Disc->choose the game you want->go back to “home” (if you’re on the latest Fall 2011 dashboard)->select Eject disc->Boot game.

Compatibility (10/10):

All of the games that were tested works.

REVIEW SCORE: 91% out of 100% = GREAT
