When Apple announced the iPad last year January, it was not the end of the PC era but rather a new chapter. The company who is known for reinventing the wheel did just that when they took a form factor that has been around for some time now and revolutionized it. In that time the company sold 15 million of the original iPad units and with the launch of the iPad 2 earlier this year, it is clear that they are hell bent on keeping their market dominance.

Google on the other hand is hell bent on destroying that dominance and with the help of Honeycomb and manufacturers such as ASUS, Samsung and HTC, they hope to topple Apple’s short lived king as the ruler of the tablet sphere. (more…)

Creating Your Own Android Application: Find Out How

by miccyla - on Jun 17th 2011 - 1 Comment

The android craze has hit the world with such storm that thousands upon thousands of applications have been released for everyone’s use! You can choose from an extensive array of different kinds of android applications from business, movies, music, games, lifestyle, health and many more. So it wouldn’t come as a surprise if you’d want to be a part of the fun as well and create your own android application as well. You can have it for your own use and you can also have it available for everyone to download. Listed below are the different ways you can start your Android application project.

  1. Application Development Tool – several companies allow you to use their platforms. Though you might not be able to achieve that complicated feel you are hoping to have, at least you’ll be able to make your first android application. There are usually templates you can choose from and then some tools let you choose what kind of application you’d want to create (eg. Music, ebook, etc)
  2. Let the professionals do it for you – if you’re so much into having a unique and customized android application but you don’t have the patience and the time to do it then the only option you have is to find someone else who can do it for you. There are several companies who will be able to help you with this. Though, this may be a bit expensive but it will definitely be worth your money. Just make sure that you be very clear with the specifications you want your android application to have. Take the time to agree with the time frame.
  3. Do it Yourself – the hardest way of creating your own android application is probably to create everything from scratch but it is the most fulfilling as well. This is the most time consuming and energy draining way too. However, you’d be able to customize everything to the smallest detail of your android application. You’d feel like the biggest genius after you finish your app. Best way to start is by downloading the development tools, buy a book to explain to you the basics then talk to professionals as well. In no time, you’ll learn everything there is to know about creating an android application — enough for companies to hire you as a developer.

These are probably the three basic ways you can build an android application. Pick which of the three you think would work best for you. Use a tool — ask for help — or think, “what the heck! I’m gonna do this myself!” whichever you decide to choose, make sure you have fun and learn! Then let your Android application do its magic!

Google To Roll Out A Fix For Security Hole In Android

by Dukio - on May 19th 2011 - No Comments

We had a report on Google’s security flaw yesterday which could affect 99% of Android smartphones, now an official Google statement reads that a fix is imminent for the widespread issue which does not need any action from the consumers as it is has been patched on the server side.

“Today we’re starting to roll out a fix which addresses a potential security flaw that could, under certain circumstances, allow a third party access to data available in calendar and contacts. This fix requires no action from users and will roll out globally over the next few days.”

The said exploit has been discovered by a team of researchers from a University in Germany who recently released their findings online.

99% Android Users At Risk For Personal Data Leakage

by Dukio - on May 18th 2011 - 1 Comment

The researchers at the University of Ulm, Germany are not impressed with the security in Android smartphones after they found several exploits that could lead to a great damage in Android user’s privacy. What they has found is that any Android smartphones running firmware versions prior to the previous 2.3.3 are prone to ClientLogin authentication protocol exploit. Below are the explanation which has been quoted from their article:

ClientLogin is meant to be used for authentication by installed applications and Android apps. Basically, to use ClientLogin, an application needs to request an authentication token (authToken) from the Google service by passing an account name and password via a https connection. The returned authToken can be used for any subsequent request to the service API and is valid for a maximum duration of 2 weeks. However, if this authToken is used in requests send over unencrypted http, an adversary can easily sniff the authToken (e.g. with Wireshark, see screenshot below). Because the authToken is not bound to any session or device specific information the adversary can subsequently use the captured authToken to access any personal data which is made available through the service API. For instance, the adversary can gain full access to the calendar, contacts information, or private web albums of the respective Google user. This means that the adversary can view, modify or delete any contacts, calendar events, or private pictures. This is not limited to items currently being synced but affects all items of that user.

The attack is very similar to stealing session cookies of websites (Sidejacking). The feasibility of Sidejacking attacks against well-known websites such as Facebook or Twitter, has lately been demonstrated by the Firesheep plugin which attracted a lot of attention.

Here is a screenshot from Wireshark program that shows the authToken for ClientLogin in a data API request to the Picasa Web Albums service, an experiment that has been done by the group of researchers.

Google just released 2.3.4 version update few weeks ago but there are still a lot of phone providers out there that did not roll out the latest version yet. So, if you are still on 2.3.3, and that there is no 2.3.4 available for you, it is better if you stay away from any open WiFi networks nearest you as to what has been suggested by the researchers. Ok, now i need to check which Android version my phone is running to.
