Tutorial: swap between different PS3 firmware (CFW, OFW, or MFW) — without the need of expensive USB devices

by Rith - on Jan 25th 2012 - 8 Comments

Shaitan, from psx-scene, has written up a nice tutorial on how to swap between different PS3 firmware, without the need of expensive USB devices. According to Shaitan, you can swap between custom firmware, official firmware, and modified firmware. The setup shouldn’t take more than 3 minutes.

Shaitan says:

Hi guys, I’m always looking for ways to make my PS3 experience easier so this was awesome. It’s nothing special but I’m constantly needing to change firmwares like many of you so I thought I’d share it. To do this it’s best to use QA Flag Extra since most firmwares cant enable “System Update Debug”.

Open PS2 Loader v0.8 ISO released for non-backwards compatible PS3 consoles — tutorial available

by Rith - on Jan 16th 2012 - 4 Comments

Forum member coveman from tortuga-cove has released Open PS2 Loader v0.8 ISO for non-backwards compatible PS3 consoles. For those unfamiliar with Open PS2 Loader (OPL), it’s a PS2 ISO loader originally developed for the PS2 (remember Free McBoot?).

Keep in mind, in order to boot the Open PS2 Loader ISO, you’ll need the Cobra USB device. What luck! We’re giving away 5 Cobra USB devices this month!

Click here to find out how you can win 1 of the 5 Cobra USB devices!

coveman says:

I created an “Open PS2 Loader” ISO file, so you can just load it from Cobra Manager or multiMAN.

Features:
You don’t need SWAP MAGIC
You don’t need any optical disc at all in your PS3
Works on non-backwards compatible PS3 (fat and slim)

Requirements for tutorial:

  • Jailbroken PS3
  • Cobra USB device
  • Cobra USB custom firmware v3.55 installed on PS3
  • USB flash drive
  • External USB hard drive
  • USBUtil v2.00 (see download below)
  • Open PS2 Loader v0.8 ISO (see download below)
  • ESR disc patcher GUI v0.24a (see download below)

Tutorial:

  1. Extract the Open PS2 Loader (ISO).rar file
  2. Transfer Open PS2 Loader.ISO to /dev_hdd0/PS2ISO/ found on your internal PS3 HDD
  3. Using Windows XP/Vista/7, format external USB hard drive as FAT 32.
  4. Use ESR disc patcher GUI app to patch your PS2 ISO
  5. Use USBUtil to transfer your patched PS2 ISO to your USB hard drive (step #3 must be completed)
  6. Plug in external USB hard drive to PS3 and Cobra USB device
  7. Start PS3 Open PS2 Loader from Cobra Manager or multiMAN Cobra Manager
    1. Note: Cobra Manager needs Cobra USB custom firmware

Cheers to RazorX for tutorial tips!

About cover:

I included the cover so you can either put it in /covers_retro/psx/SLES_806.08_COV.JPG or rename it to “Open PS2 Loader.jpg” and put it along side the ISO in PS2ISO folder.

[Tutorial] How to transfer data from 3.65 PS3 to 3.55

by KingX - on Jun 19th 2011 - 3 Comments

First off, thanks to Skatekid for the tutorial and XDev for the video proof.  In this tutorial, you basically need two PS3s.  This is useful for those who need to get dlc map pack accounts or so on their 3.55 cfw.  This does not work for REBUG 3.55.  It has to be one of the other 3.55 cfws out there.  And this will work for 3.61 to 3.55 as well.

Tutorial:

First off the Regular PS3 needs to be on 3.65 Firmware.
Your Second PS3 needs to Be on a 3.55 CFW “Not Rebug”
DOWNLOAD FOR SPOOF BELOW
Next You will need to download the 3.65 spoofer. Lost redirect

[Tutorial] External HDD Split Game Compatibility List

by KingX - on May 18th 2011 - 7 Comments

PS3 owners, running out of room on your internal hard drive to store those illegal backups that you have recently downloaded? Well, got a solution for you! Here’s a tutorial that can use to free up space on your internal hard drive—by caching a certain amount of game data (usually small in size) to the internal hard drive and storing the rest (the larger portion) onto an external USB hard drive.  So far it only has been confirmed to work with 3.55 Kmeaw with multiMAN.  If anyone wants to give it a try with different CFWs, let us know how it goes.

Tutorial:

1:  Install BDEMU2
2: Set the BD-Rom emulator to Hermes in the XMMB/settings menu in multiMAN
3: Restart your console
4: Delete game data in XMB (if it was installed prior to following this tutorial)
5: Launch game in multiMAN and install cache to internal HDD

List of games that have been tested and confirmed working on 3.55 Kmeaw CFW with multiMAN only:

Blaz Blue: Continuum Shift
Dirt
Dynasty Warriors 7
Final Fantasy XIII
God of War Collection
Gran Turismo 5
Killzone 2
Killzone 3
LEGO Batman
LEGO Indiana Jones 2
Medal of Honor
Metal Gear Solid 4
MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
Resistance: Fall of Man
Star Ocean: The Last Hope International
UFC 2010
Uncharted 2

by Rith - on May 17th 2011 - 12 Comments

rebug_online

For those interested in getting back online without having to install the newly released firmware v3.61, we may have a solution for you. You’ll need to have the Rebug custom firmware v3.55 installed on your PS3, for this DNS bypass trick to work—giving you access to Sony’s sp-int online network.

Note: Since the PlayStation Network is not 100% restored, some users may have trouble getting this to work in their respective country. A few credible NGU members have confirmed that it is working for them.

If you are not on Rebug, you can check out this post for download and instructions.

Tutorial:
1) Navigate to your PS3 network settings, change the DNS to:
