Developer shevens, from ps3crunch has found a way to boot PlayStation 1 (PSX) backups on his PS3 slim running custom firmware v3.55–Rebug v3.55.2 to be exact. He’s not sure whether this method will work for jailbroken PS3 consoles with firmware v3.41. It’s important to note that saving to memory card does not work.
Schevens says:
hi there,
I am ScHeVeNs a German PS3 Developer,
I have found a way, to boot any burned PS1 Backup Game, its not very hard to make…
Requirements:
PS3 with 3.55CFW
(maybe also a 3.41 machine, but not tested in moment!) ( I use Rebug 3.55.2 for that )
multiMAN latest version!
PS1 Backup on burned Disk……
Start your PS3,
Insert your burned PS1 Copy,
start multiMAN,
go to filemanager mode,
search for:
dev_flash\ps1emu,
Press X on ps1_emu.selfTada, your Ps1 Backup will now boot and you see the PSLogo Bootscreen.
maybe this works also on PS2 Games Backups but i have a PS3 slim….and can not test this!
Have fun with this….
And give $ony a slap in her ….. face.
If you’re having problems, here are some additional information that may come in handy.
i use rebug 3.55.2 the main pup not the latest update…
and OtherOS++ Patch not more….
i have tested this with many games and all works…
FF9,
RE3
RE2 Leon Discand the old but good XploderCD9000 this also works with cheats enabled….
on Final 9 or RE3….
try the netemu.self with the burned disc inside….
hope this fix your problem.
Update: One of our readers has decided to share with us a method on how to save your PSX game progress:
I <3 Sony says:
****HOW TO SAVE PS1 GAMES****
Create a PS1 memory card under Memory Card Utility (PS/PS2) and set it to Slot 1. Now, multiMAN will be able to access and save to this slot.Note: Be sure to NOT run multiMAN before creating Slot 1 or it may not work.
source ps3crunch

This will be sweet once the memory card thing is fixed, I’m sure Deank will add this to multiman so you don’t have to go to file manager just select the ps1 backup disc.
I did it and can confirm that it actually does work. i did it with a copy of SOTN. There is a problem assigning slots on the memory card. that’s the only thing that sucks. I am running PS3 PHAT on kmeaw 3.55. I was amazed! I am now wondering if it will work with backed up PS2 games
I’m copying it in Multiman to see what I can do with it. You can also create an ISO from the disc, but what’s the use of that? COBRA USB devs could suck a fat one!
Man……………….. thats awesome. It works. yahoooooooooooo
)
The Virtual Memory Card manager doesn’t work. It crashes every time.
OMG! It works with PSP games too! Burn .cso file to blank DVD using img burn. Put it into PS3 under MultiMan it shows up as a PS2 disc or PS3 disc. Follow the rest of the instructions dev_flash/pspemu/pspemu.self and it fuckin works!!!!
lol. I don’t see how that’s going to work.
What PSP game did you try? And did you burn it as ISO or CSO? DVD or CD?
burned a iso of gow psp game as data dvd and tried on ps3- DID NOT WORK
I Bet Dean will find a way where we can do this Disk less lol great news and so simple
Promessas promessas , ps3 ta foda só promessa e nada
i have phat ps3 and both ‘ps1_emu.self’ and ‘ps1_netemu.self’ works for me and i can play any ps1 game i’ve tried – as the others already mentioned no memory card though and trying to select one freeze the ps3. also, it seems it depends on the media used to burn the game too: - burn ps1 game on dvd-r disc then when run ‘ps1_emu.self’ or ‘ps1_netemu.self’ my ps3 freezes- burn ps1 game on cd-r disc then it work i’ve tried one ps2 burned to dvd-r media, but running any *.self in dev_flashps2emu just causes exit back to xmb. anyway, i believe the method is very promising and soon there will be improvements when more knowledgeable people look into it.

Thank you now it’s actually playable.
The instructions are so vague! Is there a language barrier here? “Note: Be sure to NOT run multiMAN before creating Slot 1 or it may not work.” I followed these instructions and loaded MultiMan, and I am not sure what to do next. Do I assign slots in MultiMan? Or do I load the game, push the PS button, and assign slots with the game playing, which has always resulted in the PS3 crashing or hanging. Sony with all due respect, you need to be able to express yourself properly whereby others could understand what you’re saying. Give detailed instructions as to how you achieved the Saving Progress via MEMCard. Thanks pal.Update. Tried it again, your method does not work.
hmm, something interesting: i copied ‘dev_flashps1emu’ via ftp from my ps3 to my computer, then copy folder ‘ps1emu’ from my computer to my usb-flash-drive, plug the use-flash-drive to the ps3 and run ‘ps1_emu.self’ with multiman from the use-flash-drive and still everything works. that’s why i decided to do the same with ‘ps2emu’, but copy to the use-flash-drive those files from cobra 3.55 cfw: ps2_emu.self (same as in the ofw), ps2_gxemu.self (same as in the ofw), ps2_softemu.self (different than the ofw), pst_emu.self (not existing in the ofw), pst_gxemu.self (not existing in the ofw) and run the cobra files from the usb on my phat ps3, but the same happens as before – see my previous post under name ‘qwerty’ here. so, no matter if i use cobra or original firmware ‘ps2emu’ files when i run them in multiman with dvd in the driver burned with ps2 image nothing happens except multiman quits to xmb. however, at least with cobra files i saw ‘disc’ icon for a second in the right upper corner – so maybe the cobra files read the disc, but quit because no cobra device is connected – i didn’t see the ‘disc’ icon when use the ofw files. anyway, maybe, someone knowledgeable can understand what is patched in the cobra files and if they did some check for the cobra device and remove it.

ok, it works for me, but i’m not sure i can explain it better, but at least i will try: 1) you need to have multiman v2.07.06 installed 2) on you computer burn the ps1 game to cd media (if i use dvd media my ps3 freezes) 3) on your ps3 create memory card: Game icon —> Memory Card Utility (PS/PS2) – that will make 120 kB internal memory card and assign slot 1 (it’s by default) 4) insert the burned cd of the ps1 game (from step 2) in your ps3 bd driver 5) open multiman as how it’s done usually 6) it will show you the PSX disc icon select it and press X and you ps1 game will run 7) press PS button, then press PS button again and you will get menu in which there is option for assigning memory card/slot – chose it and select slot 1 there 8) that’s all and it works for me : phat ps3, otheros++ cfw, but i don’t believe the ps3 model of cfw really matters
I got it to work. The important thing is you CANNOT rename the MEM Card. I was renaming it. It has to remain the default name that’s appended by the PS3 Memory Card Manager. Which is Internal blah blah blah. But that’s guys!
WOW! So it only works with a couple of games. Final Fantasy 7 is not one of them, so i Street Fighter Alpha 3. MultiMan does not recognize these 2 burn games. However when going into the de_flash folder and doing it the original method, it loads the games, but no Saving can be done.
that is bug in MultiMan – it doesn’t detect disc-type properly – i’m testing here with PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs and MultiMan randomly confuses their type – in my opinion MultiMan need to add option to manually select/overwrite the detected disc-type, i.e. count on our own intelligence and that we know better what disc-type is inserted if the disc-type-detection can’t be made reliable. i don’t know how to contact the MultiMan author to inform him about it.
new MultiMan v2.07.07 Update solved the issue – so now we have full support for any ps1 game
i have phat ps3 and i hope someone will figure it out for ps2 games too.
actually, while it seems all ps1 games are not properly recognized there are still bugs with disc-type-detection, because multiman continue to recognizes for example ps2 disc as psx (ps1 discs). also, it seems to me in some ps1 games part of the audio is missing – for example in Resident Evil 1 Director’s Cut there are fx sounds in the game, but no dialogs and no audio on most of the videos – i’ve never played that game before and i don’t have real ps1 unit to check, but that just doesn’t seem normal – i guess it’s problem with the ps1_emu of ps3.
