iPhone 8 Rumors: Curved OLED Screen and No Physical Home Button

iPhone 8

Many people would know by now that next year’s Apple smartphone will come in three different flavors. This is a complete departure from the usual standard and Plus models released starting with the iPhone 6. New reports further solidify the rumors that Apple is planning a third version of the iPhone 8 for next year. According to the same reports, Apple is already in the prototyping stage on the top-tier version of the next generation smartphone.

Last August, Nikkei Asian Review suggested that Apple will release three versions of the iPhone 8 next year. The first one will be a 4.7-inch and the other one is a 5.5-inch model. Both models will sport an IPS LCD screen like the previous iterations. The third one, however, will sport a curved edge-to-edge OLED screen akin to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

As far as supply of display goes, it is rumored that the primary display supplier will be Samsung Display. Meanwhile, LG, Sharp, Japan Display were also included in the list to support the forecasted display shortage.

Another feature on top of the rumor list is the supposed disappearance of the physical home button on the iPhone 8. Apple has already started ditching the clicking button by using haptic feedback on the iPhone 7’s home button. This time around, reports suggest that the home button will be buried beneath the display. If the rumor is true, the iPhone 8 will be the first phone to feature a totally edge-to-edge display on a mobile device.

Just like any other iPhone in existence, the iPhone 8 is slated for a Fall of 2017 release. However, since this is going to be the 10th Anniversary iPhone, much fanfare is being given for the launch. According to rumors, Apple will release the iPhone 8 with a 10nm chip, possibly an A11 Fusion. This rumor is based on the fact that Samsung and Qualcomm will release its first 10nm chip, the Snapdragon 835, sometime next year. To keep up with the competition, Apple would want the iPhone 8 to have the best specs that money can buy.
