The Coalition is trying a Gears of War 4 cross-play test this weekend. While the trial will enable both Xbox One and PC players to play against each other, it will also open the doors for a better multiplayer experience as the game’s servers will be more populated. The developers are asking players to join and they have also increased the win/loss XP to bring more players during the trial. The developer will be evaluating the test results and feedback, and it will eventually help the multiplayer mode in many ways.
The Coalition says that if everything goes well, the cross play weekend test might lead them to make this a permanent feature for players. In an official statement, the developer said that the purpose of the event is to try cross-play in the public playlist.
The two versions of the game were meant to be separate for the multiplayer experience, but The Coalition is now bringing all the players together. “From the beginning, we stated our intention to keep both platforms separate in non-cooperative game modes in order to preserve competitive balance. Conserving a fair, competitive environment remains a top priority for us,” said the developer.
Cross-play has always been a controversial topic among gamers. The ability to play against each other has been considered unfair due to the platform limitations on both Xbox One and PC. When it comes to cross-play, PC players always have a competitive edge over the console players. The freedom and ease the keyboard and mouse setup provides can’t be replaced by a controller.
Many Xbox One gamers may not agree with the idea of bringing a permanent Gears of War 4 cross-play solution, but the developer has assured fans that a fair gameplay will be their top priority and they will be collecting feedback during the weekend to analyze how the gameplay goes when PC and Xbox One players come together.
The studio has already made it very clear that what happens next is not yet decided, because it is just the first step in the process. The Coalition community manager Liam Ashley said that the studio is not going to make any surprise changes, as they want to collect data first to decide on their next move. If you want to join Gears of War 4 cross-play on PC or Xbox One, you can simply join the trial session online.
