A Playing the Role Special: A Look Ahead

Wuerfel5

Well, we’ve reached the end of July and the year is just past half-over. In the first half we saw great RPG release such as…..well, there was Fallout DLC. In the next couple of months we are going to see an avalanche of new releases not just limited to the RPG genre, but for video games in general. Arkham Asylum, Dark Void, Uncharted 2, Forza Motorsport 3, Modern Warfare 2, and Left 4 Dead 2 are all games that we hear about endlessly. But fuck all that, we all know you’re a 30 year old man who never leaves the house and sports a balding-ponytail combo. Grab your dice and cheetos, it’s time for a look at some upcoming RPGs. Dragon Quest IX Sells 2.3 Million In Two Days

slime

Now you must understand something before you read this. DQ9 was only released in Japan. It wasn’t released anywhere else in the world and moved 2.3 million copies. They say that 80% of stock in Japan is depleted. I’d love to hear Dragonwarrior’s comments on this. I may consider picking up at least one DQ game to see what all the hype is about. This goes to show that the power of portable gaming destroy’s console gaming in Japan. I guarantee you FF13 will not have these numbers. Here’s the original story from Andriasang which was translated from Famitsu.com:

Dragon Quest IX sold 2,343,440 copies in its first two days of sales, Famitsu.com reported today citing data from its parent Enterbrain. This figure covers July 11 and July 12. The game was released on the 11th, a Saturday, to the usual numbered DQ fanfare.

These early sales suggest that DQIX may be off to a better start than its predecessor. Famitsu.com also reports that over its first two days back in 2004, Dragon Quest VIII managed 2,237,000 units.

The PS2 title went on to sell 3.68 million units in Japan alone. Some insiders and analysts believe that DQIX could top the 5 million mark domestically.

Video Game Warzone #49: Does The Wii Have A Negative Impact On The Hardcore Market

bloodywarzone2

On this episode we discuss why 3rd parties view the Wii as a casual games console and how it’s negatively affecting the hardcore market. Red Steel 2 for instance, looks to be an awesome game. How is it that you wield a sword and carry a gun, killing everything in your path but yet there’s no blood in the game. This is what I call the Wii Effect. Ubisoft is catering to the casual market so they are dumbing down what could be a great game.

Also on this show:

* What if PS3 and 360 both launched in Nov 2006? Where would they be now? (Torrence)
* PS3 Slim a reality? (Torrence)
* Blaze Blue and the lost art of 2D fighters and games(Torrence)
* What does it mean when you say that you’re not a fan of a console (Weapon X)
* Asteroids being made into a film (Chad)
* Gaikai is groundbreaking and will change PC gaming forever (Hiphopgamer)
* And much much more…
