Windows Gaming the unsung Hero
There have been many upon many debates on whether or not PC Gaming is dwindling into obscurity. If you’ve been following me for a while, I know that you know where I stand when it comes to my gaming habits. For those that don’t know hit the break.
A Quick Correction On TV Resolutions
I made a mistake the other night in stating that PAL is 525 lines of resolution. That’s just PAL M. Currently, NTSC is 525/60hz and PAL is 625/50hz and these are the broadcast resolutions for each. 720×480(NTSC) and 720×576(PAL) are DVD resolutions. So technically I was correct about HD being higher than 525, I just picked the wrong standard. There is no such thing as sub-HD. If you were to use the term sub-HD you would be talking about resolutions lower than HD which are SD and ED. If there is a name for the resolutions between 525 and 720, it hasn’t been documented anywhere.
Thank you and good night!

1080p HD Test For Davis Daily
Machine is built, Windows 7 7068 is installed and I couldn’t be happier. I can honestly say that this is the best operating system Microsoft has ever created. They have turned the tides. My hardware rocks hard. I output this 1080p file in like 30 seconds just to test blip.tv HD playback. This is the quality you can expect from Davis Daily from now on. I also hooked my computer up to my 46″ Samsung and it’s incredible. Davis Daily comes back tomorrow. Sorry for the delay!

HDMI: To Cheap It Out Or Not
I’ve been telling people for the past few years to just purchase cheap HDMI cables for your PS3. I was never a fan of Monster Cable and thought their component cables were outrageously priced. I used basic RCA cables for my component hook up and never had a loss of quality. I thought the same would be the case for HDMI. I have some $20 cables and they display my video just fine. It wasn’t until I went to CES and had some long discussions with HDMI experts that I changed my mind about this. One of them, Dan Perrett, gave me an earful of information about HDMI. Because of this, I’m now a Monster Cable fan. Read the rest of this entry »

$60M in Blu-Ray Sales Last Week
This data is from a website called Blu-ray. It is not an official Blu-ray site. It actually looks like a commercial site. Their source is Home Media Magazine, but I cannot find the article on the original site. Thanks to N4G for this tip.
According to Home Media Magazine, consumers spent over $60M on Blu-ray titles last week, representing 14% of the home media market. The 167% spike is due in large part to the Blu-ray release of ‘The Dark Knight’, which is breaking Blu-ray sales records around the world. Comparatively, the previous week, where ‘Wanted’ was the hot new release, consumers spent $23.64M on Blu-ray.
On the year in whole, consumers have spent nearly $500M on Blu-ray titles, and the average spent per week has been growing as adoption continues to rise.
2008 LG HDTVs (LG50, 60, and 70 series) – Consumer Warning
Back in June, after deciding (and trying in my home) that the Samsung LN46A650 and LN46A550 wouldn’t work well for my setup, due to their glossy and semi-glossy/matte screens, respectively, I decided to try out LG once again. The following article will detail the various issues that I experienced over the past few months.
Sony Video Store Is Great, But Still Not Up To Par
A year and a half after the launch of the PS3, Sony finally delivers the goods on the video store. They offer SD and HD films, rentals and purchases. Has Sony finally given PS3 users the edge with the video store or is it just a bad copy of the Xbox Live Video Marketplace? Read the rest of this entry »

Consoles Playing Follow the Leader
This is sure to bring some flames, but two articles released today provide a glimpse at competitive decisions that are being made by each console and their respective developers (check after the break for my thoughts):
- Videogamer.com reports that “New Wii game engine promises PS3 [and 360] visuals” (brackets mine based on content in the article)
- LA Times reports “Sony to launch online video service for PlayStation 3.” Read the rest of this entry »
PS3 Gets DTS-HD 7.1 Audio Capabilities
Another huge update to the PS3 is upon us. DTS-HD 7.1 audio has now been added and the new PSN Store is revamped. It’s nice to be able to download these updates over the net. I feel bad for the early stand-alone Blu-Ray adopters. Here’s the full release from Sony: Read the rest of this entry »
