With the increased popularity of online gaming, there have been many predictions the one day online gaming will exceed offline console and pc gaming in terms of quality and popularity. No longer is online gaming confined to blackjack or poker. Most of the world's best games can be played online!

Bleeps and Bloops: One of Gaming’s Greatest Virtues

music-notes-banner

Music. Music is the art form of sound which is enjoyed throughout the entire world, and perhaps even beyond it. The true definition of what constitutes music has been debated for years and years with no resolve, but I personally consider it to be any audible sound which results in the enjoyment of a listener. This means that the definition of music changes depending on the person. While what one considers music changes from person to person, few would argue the fact that gaming has brought us some truly amazing soundtracks year after year. From Kondo to Uematsu, from O’Donnell to Tallarico, gaming has been blessed with a number of outstanding composers. Why is it then, that it still remains one of the most overlooked features in a game? How often do you hear “Yeah I thought the bgm on the 5th stage was some of the best stuff I’ve heard in years” in casual gaming conversation, compared to “The detail in that level was outstanding, very easy on the eyes”? This is more than just bleeps and bloops, this is music in gaming. Read the rest of this entry »

PLAYXPERT ANNOUNCES LATEST SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS® 7 AND DIRECTX® 10 (Impressions)

PX Main

I just received an update from PlayXpert and I like what I see. PC gamers are always having to sign up or create multiple accounts to game with their buddies online when playing a PC game. The time is upon us for a do it all, connect it all and voice for all software application for Windows PC gamers. Rejoice, it’s PlayXpert time. I’ve been testing out this product for a while now and to be quite honest, most of the time it crashed or didn’t work at all until now.

The Joe Vriens Interview

Not many of you may know, that aside from gaming, I have a strong passion for drawing. I have been drawing pretty much since I knew what pencils and paper were. While I don’t draw as often as I used to, I still appreciate the talent of others. With the release of Marvel vs Capcom 2 finally hitting PSN this week I decided I wanted to do something special for gamers who also happen to be fellow art enthusiasts.

Fighting In 2009

Over the past couple of weeks I have been discussing the games of 2009 that I’m looking forward to as well as the games that have already made it to market. More specifically the fighting games of 2009. With the release of the limited edition retail version of Marvel vs Capcom 2 hitting Gamestop this week, I thought it might be nice to take a look back at and offer my take on 2009’s fighting games.

Xbox Live! Games on Demand to cost an arm and a leg (price comparison)

Today was supposed to be a great day for Xbox Live! users as the new “SUMMER” dashboard update
was released to all connected Xbox 360s. For the most part the update has been well received and from what I have been seeing on Twitter and Facebook everyone seems to like the new features on Netflix and a ton of little tweaks to the UI for a more enjoyable experience. Now I for one love the Xbox 360 so please don’t think of this as a hate letter to Microsoft or the Xbox team. I am merely here to offer information to XBL users of a huge rip off (IMO) that is taking place right in from of our faces and that is the pricing of the games available on the new Game on Demand offering. I have never seen such a huge price difference in digital distribution vs retail pricing on any other platform. The following information is only here as a reference point and the prices are as of Aug. 11th and can change at any time from this point forward. I did a back and forth with XBL Games on Demand and Amazon.com for my comparison, so take this how you may. Read the rest of this entry »

Is Valve Being Fair To 360 Owners?

My first video editorial, enjoy.

PSN Thursdays

Many of my Thursday afternoons over the past year and a half have been spent anticipating Sony’s Playstation Store updates in the hopes that there would be some measure of content that interested me. When I first joined the Sony PS3 party in February of 2008 there were already a laundry list of PSN titles that had recieved critical acclaim. In those early months as a PS3 owner, deciding on buying a game and what game to buy, was so much easier. I can honestly say I am satisified with the games I purchased in 2008 with the exception of Soul Calibur IV.

Gamers Shouldn’t Worry About Delays!

Personally I believe 2009 is going along great with some great titles for all consoles despite a few key games being pushed back until next year for that system/systems. It’s still got several games left that you would not have time to play anything new for a while. Some would disagree. GamesRadar journalist seem to have a lot of time on their hands if they can play every single game their listed, I mean, who could really be letdown by the number of games we have right now – some still yet to be released until the end of the year – to even be worried about any other game right now. I am sure not. I am still playing Fable II from time to time. Read the rest of this entry »

A Playing the Role Special: A Look Ahead

Wuerfel5

Well, we’ve reached the end of July and the year is just past half-over. In the first half we saw great RPG release such as…..well, there was Fallout DLC. In the next couple of months we are going to see an avalanche of new releases not just limited to the RPG genre, but for video games in general. Arkham Asylum, Dark Void, Uncharted 2, Forza Motorsport 3, Modern Warfare 2, and Left 4 Dead 2 are all games that we hear about endlessly. But fuck all that, we all know you’re a 30 year old man who never leaves the house and sports a balding-ponytail combo. Grab your dice and cheetos, it’s time for a look at some upcoming RPGs. Definition of a Gamer Girl

What is a girl gamer? A female gamer who enjoys playing games and regularly does so. Female gamers vary widely between the extremes of ‘casual’ and ‘hardcore’ gaming, and may be interested in any genre or type of game. They may have a particular game that they specialize in, or may play a variety of different games. Girl gamers are most often noticed in games as they’re rarer there, rather than in MMOGs where there are many female players. Thanks Urban Dictionary. Then why is it half of those so-called girl gamers have zero gamer score or only play to get the attention of men? I’m all for girl gamers, in fact, most of my friends are girl gamers that play because it’s what they are truly interested in. Read the rest of this entry »

g-Ripe: Post E3 Impressions from an Average Asian Gamer

Let the flaming wars begin. Not only do we have Xbox and PS3 fanboys, we have E3 fanboys now. How can you be a fanboy to an event? I don’t know. Ask all the folks who appear on “Fanboys.” Anyways, let’s get to the point. What did this “average Asian gamer” think of this year’s E3? A week has passed and I have had the weekend to reflect on the event and here’s what I say. E3 did come back . . . at least . . . in a sense. It felt like the old days. Last year’s was a nice change of pace and it was nice that it was easier to access VIP areas and get more interviews last year, but this year’s E3 is what it should all feel like . . . for the most part. I would say they are at about 75% of the glory days. Read the rest of this entry »

Reviews Used As Fact

It amazes me at times what I find on the internet that makes me feel like I’ve lost hope in humanity as a whole. Earlier today I was browsing through sites and came across something that has been a growing trend in the video game community – reviews used as selling points to games.
