Gearbox Software recently teased that a major reveal is set to go down on December 1st. The date falls on the same day as The Game Awards 2016 (TGA 2016), which has led many fans to believe that whatever game they’re planning to unveil will be showcased during the show. Most fans are hoping that it will be Borderlands 3, but there is some evidence that indicates it could be something else.
Borderlands 3? Brothers in Arms? Duke Nukem?
Last month, a user on NEOGAF by the name of IbizaPocholo spotted a listing of in-development games in a Screen Actors Guild document. One of the titles was a possible new entry in Gearbox’s long dormant WWII series: Brothers in Arms.
The last we heard from this series was at E3 2011, when Gearbox announced Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 during Ubisoft’s press conference. The game, which never made it to store shelves, was meant to be a humorous, Inglorious Basterds-style take on the era with a cartoon art style and class-based co-op mechanics. In 2015, Gearbox head honcho Randy Pitchford told IGN that the groundwork for Furious 4 eventually became the foundation of Battleborn, the studio’s struggling MOBA-FPS hybrid.
In the same interview, Pitchford said that his studio was still committed to the franchise, saying they were in the “early stages” of developing a proper Brothers in Arms sequel. Could this be the game they show on Thursday?
Other possible non-Borderlands 3 announcements include a new Duke Nukem game or maybe even a free-to-play announcement for Battleborn. Whatever it is, we won’t have to wait long to find out.
