Sorry, Battlefield fans, it looks like we won’t be getting Battlefield Bad Company 3 — or any other Battlefield title for that matter – anytime soon. Electronic Arts has just announced that it will be putting its premiere shooter franchise on the back burner “for a couple of years” in order to focus its efforts on a new Star Wars Battlefront game.
Battlefield Bad Company 3 Will Have To Wait
“We won’t have another Battlefield back for a couple of years. Next year we’ll have Battlefront, the Star Wars game,” said EA’s Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen while addressing the 35th NASDAQ Investor Program yesterday.
Jorgensen also said that the company was committed to addressing much of the criticism fired at their maiden Battlefront effort, which debuted to lukewarm reviews last year. Many fans felt the game was lacking in content, especially when compared against the first two games – which were developed by the now defunct Pandemic Studios.
“It’s a beautiful game, people loved it. I think if there was criticism they just wanted more. And so we’re taking that criticism to heart as we build the next game and trying to address any of the issues that they had,” explained Jorgensen.
The Battlefield franchise is currently riding high, thanks to the strong critical and commercial reception of this year’s entry: The World War I-themed Battlefield 1. Developer DICE Interactive has four major expansion packs for the game lined up to release throughout next year.
If you ask me, it’s a smart move for EA to give Battlefield a breather. As we’ve seen with both Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed, even the biggest gaming franchises aren’t immune to player fatigue. Will EA listen to the fans and finally deliver Battlefield Bad Company 3 as the series’ big return? We can only hope.
