She’s the comedian-slash-talk show host we all know and love today. You may compare her to Oprah, but heck, they’re actually close friends. Yup, it’s Ellen DeGeneres.
Ellen grew up in Louisiana and was raised by her mother, and loyal studio audience member, Betty, when she reached her youthful age of thirteen, the year when her parents divorced.
Her early comedy years started when she got her first few gigs as a stand-up comedian. Drawing more attention, she got her first sitcom called Ellen (called These Friends of Mine for its first season). And, hey, you know you’re a fan of this show if you know “The Puppy Episode” a.k.a. the coming out episode. After sometime, the show was cancelled.
Following the show’s cancellation, Ellen got another sitcom this time entitled The Ellen Show although, it didn’t last very long.
And of course, these two shows sum up to the talk show Ellen was born to be with, The Ellen DeGeneres Show or Ellen. At present, the show stands with eleven seasons and opens with her signature dances
Ellen used her voice to give the adorable blue, and forgetful, fish, Dory, to life. Since then, Ellen’s coined the catchphrase, “Just keep swimming” and she still uses it today to inspire more and more people. Heck, she sometimes even places the phrase on underwear!
She was glad to announce that Pixar was in the process of making the sequel. On her show, she called this the “second biggest announcement” that she’s ever made. Naturally, the first one would be her marriage to Arrested Development star, Portia de Rossi. Ellen, along with her class, proposed to Portia with a three-carat pink diamond ring.
Then in 2009, Ellen replaced the girl who can’t say “no”, Paula Abdul’s, place on American Idol. She was signed for five seasons but she settled for just one. In her latest book, Seriously I’m Kidding, she jokes about it saying, “Similarly, a few years ago, I told my agent, ‘I think I got some fudge on my lapel,’ and he thought I said, ‘I want to be a judge on American Idol.’ Since then I got a new phone. And I found out my agent’s name is Marvin, not Blarvin.”
Hmm, do you think Ellen would’ve been able to balance out both her talk show and Idol if she pursued both careers?
Ellen is also noted to have introduced a few big names in the music industry. We have Charice Pempengco, better known as Charice, for one. She called the young performer up and made her take on her first American performance. The singer performed “I Will Always Love You” and “And I Am Telling You”.
Another star she brought of the YouTube small screen would be Greyson Chance. She discovered Chance singing and playing Lady GaGa’s ever so famous, “Paparazzi”, and was impressed. She got Chance to perform it on her show then afterwards. She currently has him signed to her record label called Eleveneleven. She explains the name by saying that she often sees this time on her clocks, she discovered Greyson sometime around eleven, and his jersey number was also eleven.
In relation to the earlier photograph about Ellen and Portia in Australia, Ellen recently toured around said country not too long ago. She did the usual crazy stuff such as her games like Know or Go, What’s in the Box, and even the search for her next underwear model. She also held a contest for her fans in Australia to fly to America to watch her show from the studio, courtesy of Quantas. She gave the tickets out to two girls who “stayed up all night” trying to build the Quantas plane out of cardboard. Don’t worry, they didn’t make it the actual plane size, just the size for the two to fit in.
To win the contest, the fans had to think of a catchy jingle that would attract Ellen’s attention. The plane builders gave a really fun and neat one to sing so Ellen gave them the tickets.
Ellen is now trying to strengthen her show with its eleventh season and is still encouraging people to “be kind to one another”. Wow, Ellen, here’s to many more seasons to come.
