Sony fired a major cannon at Microsoft and the Xbox One during E3 2013 with its two big announcements regarding used games, and the overall price of the Sony PS4.
Microsoft announced during E3 2013 that the Xbox One was going to be priced at $499, and would not allow used games to be played on the console as they had in the past.
Sony took this news and smiled, as they knew that they had some great news up their sleeves for their conference to happen later in the day.
Sony came out during their press conference and announced that the Sony PS4 would launch at a price point of $399, a full $100 less than the Xbox One, when it launches this holiday shopping season.
This is a major move for Sony, who clearly learned from their mistakes with the Sony PS3. When Sony launched the PS3, they priced the console at $599, which at the time was $200 more than the Xbox 360. This put them at a huge disadvantage, and it was not until a price drop was announced that they were able to move units.
The $399 console will not include the PlayStation Eye camera, but chances are that the majority of Sony PS4 gamers simply do not care about that.
On top of the price point announcement, the Sony PS4 is going to allow gamers to play used games, share games with friends, and so on just as they do today. Sony clearly took the side of gamers with this move and laughed at Microsoft all the way to making the big announcement.
These are big power plays for Sony, who appears to be in the driver’s seat to completely own the holiday shopping season in 2013.
