Nintendo to host first-ever 3DS Tournament for Super Smash Bros on July 25

Legendary game developer Nintendo, which had shunned e-sports in the past, is now showing signs that it has indeed made a 180-degree turn. Apart from last month’s Wii U tournament, Nintendo has just announced that it is hosting an upcoming Super Smash Bros Tournament for their 3DS consoles during the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC).

This Super Smash Bros 3DS tournament will happen two weeks from now on July 25 at the Nintendo Gaming Lounge of the Marriott Marquis & Marina. The San Diego Convention Center can be found directly adjacent to the said hotel.

Qualifying rounds for the Super Smash Bros competition will commence by engaging players on four-on-four matches. Winners who will emerge from those will advance to the next match brackets. Ultimately, the championship round will be fought as one-on-one battles. For those who won’t be able to make it to the tournament, Nintendo will offer a livestream of the event via their Twitch channel.

Here is the official press release published by Nintendo:

“Nintendo will be hosting its first-ever tournament for the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS game at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25. Fans are invited to come to the Nintendo Gaming Lounge at the Marriott Marquis & Marina located at 333 W. Harbor Drive (adjacent to the San Diego Convention Center) for a chance to participate.

Starting at noon, there will be a preliminary round in which groups of four competitors battle it out, with the winner advancing. During the finals, players will duke it out one-on-one to determine the top smasher. Tournament slots are limited, and fans will be able to sign up the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis.

For fans not able to attend San Diego Comic-Con, tournament action will be streamed live on Nintendo’s Twitch channel at Additional Nintendo Gaming Lounge activities will be announced in the future.”

Nintendo hosted a similar affair last month during E3 2014 for the Super Smash Bros Wii U Tournament held at the Nokia Center. Both SDCC and E3 events are widely seen as publicity stunts to promote the upcoming official release of Super Smash Bros for the 3DS on October 3 and for the Wii U sometime during this year’s holiday season.

Path of Exile creators Grinding Gear Games have announced Wednesday that they will be partnering with Dynamite Entertainment, a renowned comic book and graphic novel publisher, to turn their game into a comic series. Dynamite has worked on popular graphic novels such as A Game of Thrones, among many others. The companies have agreed to release a four-issue comic book series based on the acclaimed Action-RPG game. They say this is the first time Path of Exile has been utilized in a medium outside the game.

According to the post, the first issue of the comic series will reveal the backstory from an upcoming expansion of the game, and connecting it to the existing narrative of the game. The first issue is planned for release this summer.

Each issue will have 22 pages and will be available digitally along with a unique individual cover art. The entire comic series will ultimately be compiled as a fully-colored, printed graphic novel, and be published by 2015. Players who have purchased the issue will also be given exclusive in-game items such as armor cosmetic effects, among other surprises.

The comic series will be illustrated by comic artist Carlos Rodriguez who have worked with the likes of DC comics and Marvel. The storyline will be written by Royal McGraw, a professional writer who has also worked in top-tier companies such as DC comics, SyFy Channel, and Electronic Arts. Both of them will be working closely with Grinding Gear Games’ Creative Director Erik Olofsson and Narrative Designer Edwin McRae.

Path of Exile is a free-to-play online Action-RPG game that was officially released October of last year. The game is supported by microtransactions that provide players certain leverages and enhancements. In the game, you take the role of one of seven character classes and kill monsters, finish quests, and defeat bosses to go up the ranks as you explore the dark world of Wraeclast . It currently has 5.5 million registered users.

Assassin's Creed Comet (Image Credit to LasersZ YouTube)

In the past months, up until now, all that we hear about is Assassin’s Creed: Unity, which is for the next-gen consoles. Yes. All the updates, trailers and gameplay videos for that game is a good sign that we’re in for a treat for the next-gen entry of the series, but some people aren’t ready to make the leap into the next-gen just yet. So does that mean Ubisoft is leaving them out? Not really. There’s Assassin’s Creed: Comet to look out for, but so far, we haven’t heard much about it, except recently.

Ubisoft’s CEO revealed in a recent investor call yesterday about the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Assassin’s Creed that is soon to come out. He didn’t specifically mention, which game it is, but most probably, he was referring to the “Comet”.

“We haven’t forgotten about our loyal Assassin’s Creed fans on those systems. Assassin’s Creed has a ton of fans that don’t have a next-gen system so we’ll do our best to take care of them. As soon as we have something to talk about, we will. The idea that there are still millions of people playing on current gen is not lost on us.”

While it is being referred to as “Comet”, it is not yet officially revealed or announced what the new Assassin’s Creed will be called. They have also stated that they will give out more information about the upcoming game “soon”, but we’re not sure how “soon” that is and how the rest of the information are accurate.

It is said that Assassin’s Creed: Comet will continue to use the nautical motif that the previous one, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag has. You will be able to sail the Atlantic Ocean and even reach New York.

The game will take place in the year 1758 and like the Assassin’s Creed 3, you will get to play as a Templar again with the name of Shay. These are just a few info about how Comet would play out, if the rumors are true.

Not much detail has been announced yet, but there’s a potential problem with both Assassin’s Creed Unity and this one as they are both going to be console exclusives. It would seem like you need to purchase or have both to play each of them.

A few months ago, Microsoft launched the Xbox One, but as early as now, the company is looking at the future. Redmond’s company revealed this and they’ve posted a new career opportunity, seeking an Industrial Designer.

The Xbox Industrial Design studio is building a world class in house team. We love entertainment. We live for building transformative entertainment experiences that resonate with consumers. We are looking for passionate designers who want to help us create next generation entertainment hardware for Microsoft.”

“This is a design position within the Xbox industrial design studio. You will be joining a team that drives vision and product development for Xbox hardware programs. The right candidate will be a “hands on” individual contributor that will bring thought leadership, inspirational creative output, and passion to the Xbox entertainment space. In essence, this position requires nothing less than a “super creator”.”

“As an industrial designer you will collaborate with design team and bring inventive ideas which will have large impact across the Xbox Entertainment Business.”

“We expect a spontaneous and innovative creative process that takes advantage of consumer insight harvesting, inspiration way-finding, 3d sketching, prototyping, thoughtful consideration of business needs, and understanding of technical considerations. Above all the candidate should have a portfolio that demonstrates the ability to design soulful product experiences that delight consumers.”

The post also lists “intrinsic passion for seamless hardware/software experiences” and “proven track record delivering award winning design” as prerequisites.
Even if Microsoft already begins to plan for their next-gen console, there’s nothing to be surprised about, really. Hardware designers are never really inactive, and most of the time, preliminary research begins once the previous generation of hardware has been launched; sometimes earlier. And we’re pretty sure that Sony and Nintendo are doing the exact same thing.

And in addition, the company is also said to be seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer, which means that they aim to improve the current game development tools utilized by first and third parties to make their titles on  Xbox platforms.

“The Xbox Platform Developer Experience team is hiring! We own the core development tools for the Xbox console platform, and we serve as a driving advocate for the end-to-end developer customer experience across the program. We are looking for an exceptional SDE to help us take game development tools to the next level.”

“Game developers, from AAA studios to Indie shops, have unique and exacting needs. Just think about the factors involved: Game titles are only growing in cost and complexity with each new generation. These days the projects will involve scores of engineers and hundreds of artists. They have budgets and production values that rival Hollywood blockbusters. They have 10’s of gigabytes of content, code tuned to get the utmost from our platform, and holiday release dates that won’t move.”

“The Xbox ecosystem only thrives if these partners succeed. Our goal is to help them make better games, faster.”

Of course, these career opportunities from Microsoft is just the tip of the iceberg, and it doesn’t in any way equate to official announcements. Let’s just wait for more clearer signals before we begin to speak too loudly about the “Xbox Two”.

Thinking about a new Android app to download? Check out this list of newly released apps on Google Play

Just like baby kittens, new apps need some tender, loving care too, yes? With hundreds of new apps made available on Google Play every week, it’s really easy to lose track of which new Android app truly offers real functionality or entertainment. So we’ve done you a favor and rounded up 5 of the newest apps we deem useful for all Android fans.

Copy Bubble

It has bubbles for translating, bubbles for browsing, and bubbles for messaging – obviously the developer of this new Android app has a pathogenic bubble obsession and they named the app (surprise!) “Copy Bubble.” Jokes aside, this app offers a really simple way of utilizing copied texts on your device’s clipboard and paste them into any other app on your device like Dropbox, email, Facebook, or Instagram.

Commandr for Google Now

Commandr for Google Now is apparently an app that caters to seasoned Android users. The app allows users to issue voice commands that will do various things from turning on flashlight, opening the Settings menu, controlling music playback, activating & deactivating connectivity features such as Bluetooth, GPS, and Wi-FI and much more.

Wear Aware – Phone Lost

Wearable devices powered by the Android Wear OS like Samsung Gear Live and LG G Watch have just been released. It has yet to land on many users’ wrists, but it’s better to be prepared, right? This new Android app basically has one function – it acts as a leash between your Android phone and your Android Wear device. The app will make the smartwatch buzz whenever it detects that you’re walking a certain distance away from your phone.

SoulCraft 2

This game is the follow-up to MobileBit’s SoulCraft game. This new Android app version now offers a “Multiplayer League” where players can challenge others in different “asynchronous multiplayer matches.” SoulCraft 2 is free to download from Google Play but offers in-app purchases to access more content.

This app serves as a math formula guide that comes with hundreds of formulas from various areas of mathematics. It includes formulas for Basic Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Conic Sections, Calculus and Laplace Transforms (for engineers). The developers noted that they are adding formulas for the following topics to their future update: Statistics, Vectors, 3D, Probability, Differential Equations, and Number Theory.

The Zombies Run iOS and Android app is so engaging and fun that I don’t have to force myself to run every day. In fact, I get a little miffed if the weather or any other circumstances get between me and my 30-minute workout.

Why? Here’s what you get with the the Zombies Run iOS and Android app:

  • 60 workouts that are actually running missions for the Town of Abel, completely voiced. These missions are engaging and quite alarming and disturbing at times. The writers have a tight story on this one.
  • Zombie chases that come complete with a proximity warning and zombie sounds that make you feel that they’re nipping at your heels. Let’s just say when the game tells you to run—you’re going to run.
  • Your very own zombie stronghold that you build up with resources you get from running missions. Whenever you run, you pick up artefacts and resources. From what I understand, you use the sports bras and underwear packets you pick up to build your farms.
  • Distance, step and time calculations for your runs. You still get the basic metrics that free running apps provide when you track your workouts and it even takes note of your progress.
  • Extra missions for supply runs, air drops and non-story related workouts. When you don’t want to know what’s going to happen next or you want to build up your town more before going on to the next episode of the season, there are other runs to try.
  • Your own playlists incorporated in your workout. In between the radio transmissions and zombie proximity warnings, the app uses your own songs to furnish your running music.
  • Marathon and race training programs. An additional in-app purchase lets you unlock some workout programs that prepare you for marathons and races. These runs were developed by professional trainers, as the developers say, so you may be getting top notch advice there.

Why would you want to pay $4.99 for the Zombies Run iOS and Android app that can give you the same running functions as the free Nike+ app? I find that listening to the story while I run feels like I’m listening to an audio book where I am the main character. Along with the zombie chases, this app gives running a Walking Dead twist.
