Nintendo confirms Wii U will be region locked

Nintendo has confirmed in the latest issue of Famitsu that the Wii U will be region locked.

A translation of the quote was provided on Twitter by a NeoGAF member (via IGN), “What can be played on the Wii U is restricted by a region-lock feature; software not sold in the same region cannot be played.”

Although this is not the first time Nintendo has enforced region locking for the Wii, 3DS and DS, it is certainly a blow to hardcore fans that was looking forward to importing games.
