Take an offering for licensing the Neo Geo name, the games, and then remake them into a hybrid handheld console. That’s what the Neo Geo X Gold is and that’s exactly what SNK Playmore and Tommo will be releasing in the US this coming December 6th.
The Neo Geo X Gold (NGXG) is originally designed to be a portable Neo Geo system. Featuring a 3.5″ LCD (TFT) screen and measuring at 170x72x15mm, the NGXG is one of the smallest portable handheld consoles around. On the face, we have the usual ABCD buttons and an analog nub reminiscent of the old Sega CD controller. The device also features shoulder buttons (L1, L2, R1, R2)
An AV out port and a micro USB port complements the top of the system. As for memory expansion, the NGXG features a SD card slot as well.
Additionally, SNK Playmore saw it fit in allowing players to attach the handheld onto a docking station, which would then allow the players to use a classically re-modeled Neo Geo X Joystick — seemingly for a more retro feel.
A total of 20 games will be available pre-installed on the portable handheld system, the list of which are:
- 3 COUNT BOUT
- ALPHA MISSION II
- ART OF FIGHTING II
- BASEBALL STARS II
- CYBER LIP
- FATAL FURY
- FATAL FURY SPECIAL
- THE KING OF FIGHTERS ’95
- KING OF THE MONSTERS
- LAST RESORT
- LEAGUE BOWLING
- MAGICIAN LORD
- METAL SLUG
- MUTATION NATION
- NAM 1975
- PUZZLED
- REAL BOUT – FATAL FURY SPECIAL
- SAMURAI SHODOWN II
- SUPER SIDEKICKS
- WORLD HEROES PERFECT
With just 20 games, the list might seem a little disappointing for some as a retro re-release. SNK Playmore has yet to announce details on how players will be able to add games onto the NGXG, but we assume that SD card slot will probably come in handy.
The Neo Geo X Gold will be available for a gut-wrenching $200 this coming December 6th, 2012. Save your pennies if you’re thinking of getting one, it certainly isn’t cheap.
Oh and just for clarification, ”Great game consoles don’t die; they’re just reborn in much more affordable and convenient packages,” said Tommo CEO Jonathan Wan. “The NEOGEO X GOLD is a love letter to one of my favorite consoles of all time, and working with SNK PLAYMORE to acquire the NEOGEO license, Tommo Inc. looks to provide gaming and entertainment enthusiasts with a classic arcade experience both at home and on the go.”
