Steam Bandits: Outpost is just the start of this ambitious game project

Iocaine Studios is an indie studio helmed by Jason Fader; he and his team was laid off by Obsidian Entertainment when they cancelled an unannounced project called North Carolina.

Between him and his team, they have worked on games like World of Warcraft, Fallout: New Vegas and Diablo 2. Speaking with Kotaku, Fader explained how they want to change the way we play games. Their next project will consist of three games starting with Steam Bandits: Outpost, a SimCity styled free-to-play town building game. Their second game is an action-RPG inspired by games like League of Legends and the third game is a flight simulator.

The twist will be, all three games will exist in the same universe and players will be to interact with each other between games. “If my girlfriend loves town-building games, she can play Steam Bandits: Outpost on her iPad, build up a town and stuff,” said Fader. “I’m playing the other game… one island I visit and trade with could be her island. I can link up with her and she’s on my friends list. I can visit her island at will. I can link my captain up to her island as my port of call. Any time I go on a quest, she gets a reward as well since she’s sponsoring me. And any time she produces stuff, that gives me a little boost.”

There will also be quests that will require interaction from players from all three games to complete. “Let’s say in my captain game I’m on a quest. I pick up a really weird item, a crafting recipe. Now there’s no crafting in the captain game; it’s RPG and combat focused. I can take this [recipe], hand it off to my girlfriend who’s playing the town-building game. She can build it up. I can equip it on my airship… We’re taking quests a layer above an individual game and spanning it across an actual game world.” said Fader.

The first game, Steam Bandits: Outpost is currently up on Kickstarter and has a goal of $30,000. The project is currently at a little over $11,000 at the time of this writing so be sure to help this guys out. They have 10 days to go.

Steam Bandits: Outpost will launch for iOS, Android, PC and Mac. The second game for Steam and third game for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. All will be free-to-play.
