In an interview with Famitsu as translated by Andriasang, Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada said that the company’s Luminous Studio game engine was developed specifically for RPGs and action RPGs.
When asked if it will be used to make Square Enix titles, Wada replied “We aren’t thinking about selling the engine externally, so that’s about right,”
“There’s no mistake that Luminous Studio is an engine made with the view of producing RPGs like the past Final Fantasy games. But not just that — it has a broad reach, from games with high action to games without high action.” Wada continued.
However, Wada didn’t say if it will be used to make a next generation Final Fantasy but did state that Square Enix will look into coming up with new IPs.
Currently, there are no games being developed using the Luminous Studio engine but Wada hopes to see some internal usage of the engine by this year’s end or early next year. See the tech demo here.
