Earlier today, I was playing Halo Reach on Xbox Live. As usual, I had a great game. This was topped off by victory for my squad as well. What was unusual were certain kill streaks and medals I earned in the process without trying. In Halo, getting 20 kills in a row earns combatants the “Rampage” medal. Earning at least 15 kills without dying in a Slayer match garners players the “Perfection” medal. I went 20 – 0 while leading my team to victory. I honestly had not noticed this until the end of the match when I heard the kill streak voice proclaimed “Rampage!”, and then “Perfection!” before saying “Game Over”.
In the post game lobby, everyone from both teams can hear each other. Since I did not know anyone I was playing with, I had my Turtle Beach EarForce X11s (Kudos to Turtle Beach headsets) on mute so that my voice could not be heard. I usually do this so I can hear my teammates issue call outs and tactics while also listening to hear the enemy when they draw near due to proximity chat. This allowed me to hear what the other players where saying in the post game chat. Two of my teammate praised my performance. The other one remained silent. Of course, said praises were cut short by the losing team’s verbal taunts. I will never understand why the team that loses a game runs their mouths the most. The worse the loss, the more gums they flap. They tore each other apart by blaming each other for the loss. Then one of them brought up the statistics and the fact that I had gotten a Perfection medal on them. This…is when things got interesting.
A person with the gamertag of “HMW Mayh3m” was the most displeased with losing. He blamed his teammates for letting me go on that “Rampage” …(see what I did there…okay I am sorry for that). Then, he figured it would be a good idea to “show panties” (something Ice and I would say about people who lack heart and honor). I was muted so I just laughed and left the lobby. While I was saving the film and renaming it, I started getting messages from the above named peon. I didn’t even recognize him but I assumed it wouldn’t be good based on how well I had done in the previous game. Why is it that when you do well in a game, people will trash talk you as if you lost? I never understood that. If I played someone and I got lumped the hell up like he had, I would shut the hell up. Yup, I would Shut, The, Hell, Up! But not this cat. He sends me a bunch of juvenile and racist nonsense. Unfortunately for him, I write for TheBitbag, so I figured I would put him ON BLAST! I have pictures of the stats from the game. Even better, I have pictures of the texts he sent me. I do not have to say anything, I shall let them speak for themselves since they speak volumes.
Like I said, the photographs speak volumes. Here is the question I was wondering; why does this happen? I know some will simply dismiss it as a one time thing, but that is far from the case. Others will say its because I am playing a Halo game, but things like this happen on all games and I speak on experience on that. Others still will say it is because I’m playing on Xbox Live. This is the funniest answer to me. I have played video games online on many different services. None of them were without this issue. Perhaps Xbox Live gets the rep it does because more people on Xbox Live actually use voice communication as the system comes with a headset (albeit a cheap one). Other than the Nintendo Wii, I know people and have personally experienced rubbish like this on ALL platforms that I have played online. I am sure it is on the Wii as well, I just haven’t played a game on that system that featured communication on the level of the others.
No, what I mean by the question is what is the cause for nonsense like this? Is it racism? I mean, the person who did never spoke to me at all. My mic was muted, and I said nothing to him in response to the texts. Is it immaturity? I am not a person who understands illogical behavior. I wonder what TheBitbag community comes up with. Think of this as a social experiment with the community here so Torrence and I will be paying attention to responses and speak more on this. Oh, and I wonder what the people at Xbox Live support will do when they see this post? Will they do actually law down the law? Will their be recourse or will this be ignored?
