Grand Theft Auto V Is Currently In The Testing Stages

Save this one under the rumor mill. Overheard a Rockstar game tester talking about playing Rockstar games. After discussing how much time RDR has been taking up, he mentioned the fact that he’s testing GTAV. Now he’s either blowing smoke up the collective ass or he’s telling the truth and forgot about his NDA. He DID have a Rockstar badge on but I won’t reveal his name.

Yeah im surprised Rockstar didn’t come with anything to show this E3 since they are supposedly working on so many titles.

Id like to see LA Noire… I wonder what the next GTA city would be…. Why not London or something and make it like a Guy Ritchie filmish type of story etc… that could be coo

I know I will only be disappointed to see GTA V anytime soon. Forget the fact that I haven’t finished IV yet, Rock* needs to spend more man hours development time improving its engine for PS3.

There’s really no good reason Red Dead should have been 1152×640 (QCAA) on PS3 when it was nice 1280×720 (2xAA) on X360… and then there’s the reduced triangle count on PS3 as well – and that’s at an unsteady 30fps! Not good, basically the same as GTA IV. Rock* really needs to talk to Sony about how best to use the latest API’s to move more of the RSX work to the SPE’s and use MLAA rather than QC. I want to see significant improvements to the GTA engine before V and by that I mean I also want to see a more steady 30fps frame rate.

Yes, I could just buy the X360 / PC version, but that doesn’t help those who only own a PS3 and it really is unfair on them, so Rock* must do better. It’s too bad that Rock* enjoys such a great reputation, I’d rather see Rock* work a bit harder for it…

Having both versions I can’t see how any PS3 owner would be dissappointed. Yeah, it’s not as sharp as the 360 version, but how would you know this if you didn’t have the 360 version to compare? Also, RAGE was built for the 360 before the PS3 was even available. First RAGE game, Table Tennis. No joke. So that engine really isn’t optimized for PS3.

My new quote, “It’s not the hardware, it’s the developer”

        1. Fewer triangles.
        2. Worse frame rate.
        3. Lower resolution.

        Here’s my basic explanation…

I have a sharp eye. I am very conscious about frame rate and tearing and yes, I do notice sub-HD resolutions.

I actually like 60fps so much that I think that all games should be 60fps – for a number of reasons that I won’t go into now. Inevitably, due to all the other action that devs throw into games now – to make for interesting gaming experiences – this often comes at the cost / a compromise to other things. That’s where resolution (usually due to fill rate) and geometry (triangles to render) often come in (but also other factors like A.I., physics, etc)…

I can understand a drop in resolution. I can understand a drop in geometry. I can even understand a drop in frame rate and consistency is important.

To dip in all 3 though – the game has to be special and even then, if a game’s not managing a steady 30, then it can become annoying and at times unplayable. It is quite simply poor engineering / design and it affects game play. Artists can be as much to blame as programmers.

Now fair play to Rock*, when GTA IV came out, people were still getting to grips with the PS3 and there were lots of horrible ports. My argument isn’t so much about those days, but now. There’s no excuse not to improve the GTA engine and RDR doesn’t seem to be (an improvement). In terms of sharpness there’s a huge difference between QC & 2xAA & 4xAA.

Programmers should make use of H/W available to make games run at a solid 60. That doesn’t happen often because of everything else that gets thrown in & because of what people can achieve. Truly great developers achieve this. Former Studio Liverpool (Psygnosis), former Infinity Ward & Polyphony Digital – to name a few.

The second part of your new quote is VERY fair actually, but I don’t much care for the first half because of course the hardware matters.

        Cheers

The hardware matters but it defines a set of rules for the generation. It’s up to the devs to utilize the hardware given the set of rules they are handed. IE, you have 512mb of ram on 360. How do you use it the best way?

I KNOW the ps3 version doesn’t look as good as the 360 version, but again, a single console owner would never notice it because it’s still a beautiful game.

The hardware matters of course & yes it defines the “rules” and yes there are different ways of using the hardware to achieve different effects – but you need the hardware to provide effects sometimes because it’s just too slow to do it in software – at which point, you don’t do it at all or you compromise fps / rez / geom.

Take for example Tempest 2000. Jeff “abused” the Jaguar hardware to get the effects he did out of it. Rules are made to be broken. Of course, you need talent to realise this – or at least a creative mind. If the hardware wasn’t made the way it was, it would never be an option – maybe he’d have done something else.

Presuming you’re talking about RDR / GTA IV, a single console owner would certainly notice the frame drops from 30, he’d notice it’s not HD and that’s it’s a bit blurry (QC), but he’d arguably not be able to compare poly count – as obviously he has no other reference point. If he played one of the other versions, then he’d notice, or if he had a mate who told him… The old skool arguments to show up geom remain… Draw distance, fogging, LoD and that old classic – number of baddies on screeeeeeen. Arguably more bad guys may mean a tougher game. ;-)

Anyway… Off to watch the England game now. USA got lucky didn’t they? 2:2…

            Ciao

Its still under the works and rockstar not at e3 confirms that its not ready to be shown. They always put out good games and show them at the right time.

@ LordVon US didn’t get lucky WE GOT ROBBED! They deserved the win and the 3 points. After the first half, the US had great ball control and defense. It takes some real effort to come back from 2 goals down and get a tie and even a call away from a win. England on the other hand has been rather disappointing. Rooney cannot have just 3 touches in a game…. Their teamwork is rather sporadic. They have great players but no real cohesion. France and Australia has been disappointing as well. But enough about soccer, I must agree with your initial post.

    @Torrence

Taking LordVons post from a purely observational perspective i don’t see how you could disagree. You don’t need to own both version to see their flaws. While the games do look good even with their sheer massive size and content, the flaws are rudimentary fundamental to the overall succession in each game released via the engine. Note that while many if not majority of the audience may not have as keen an eye as LordVon or even notice the short comings, they ARE there to be noticed. Simply dismissing them for the fact that the overall product still presents a nice result is very sad conclusion. We disregard them and and except the majority but to simply ignore would be an injustice. If there was no one out there calling Devs out on their shit they would get lazier and lazier only doing what would be accepted instead of trying to meet the criticism head on. Not saying they don’t do that now but we are cannot afford to lose the importance of the critique. So i have to respectfully disagree wholeheartedly with your take. Im not saying that the games look bad just that to just accept the flaws, not address or raise issue with, all because at the end of the day it is strung together nicely is wrong. Surely you can apply this to almost ANY subject, look at the conversation me and you had on Android with outlook sync…..

We addressed the issue and still accepted it’s flaws, but most importantly you didn’t just ACCEPT the flaws.

You can disagree and while we have trained eyes, I’m talking about the majority of game players out there. You, Lordvon and myself are on another level. If I had only played the pS3 version I would notice the blurriness, but wouldn’t care because the game looks so good.

Ha-ha… I thought the first half showed Slovenia really take the USA team apart, it should have been more & they should have killed the game off but they didn’t and what a great fight back from the USA in the 2nd half. Slovenia though… What happened?!? :-) The first USA goal was a really bad mistake by the defender trying to clear the ball, but it was a great finish by Donovan.

The ruled out goal was for a soft foul on Edu. If you watch the replay you’ll see he puts his hand on the defender’s arm to push him back & get to the ball first. Unlucky with that decision I think, but it’s not the first – there’s been some bad decisions in this world cup. The Germans were really hard done by the other day.

England have been rubbish so far and I’m hoping for a different team and a real performance in the next match. France and Italy – two very big footballing nations – have been just as shocking.
