Onlive is Coming! Run for the Hills

Today at GDC ’10 in San Fransisco, it was announced that OnLive would be coming June 17th to gamers in the United States. Onlive, which was revealed at last year’s GDC, was supposed to come out last Winter but never got a solid release date until now.

The platform will have a $14.95 monthly subscription fee and will have support from Ubisoft, EA, Take-Two, THQ, Warner Bros, and possibly more major publishers. Games like Metro 2033, Assassin’s Creed 2, and Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands will be some titles that will also be available with the launch of Onlive.

COO Mike McGarvey, talked more on pricing but some details are hard to make out on what gamers will be paying with their $14.95 monthly subscription fee:

“That price provides access to an ever-increasing library of high-end, new release game content and a host of exclusive community feature such as Brag Clips and massive spectating,” said COO Mike McGarvey

“Individual titles will be available for purchase or rental on an a la carte basis. Specific game pricing, including rentals, purchases and loyalty programs, will be announced prior to the consumer launch event at E3. We’ll also be announcing additional loyalty and discount programs for consumers in the coming months.”

Will the $14.95 give us access to some games, or are we basically paying $14.95 just to access the service and no games at all? Will we have to pay over $150 a year and still spend around $40 to buy a game? Will rental fees be cheaper than a place like Blockbuster? Also, how much will the microconsole cost? Lots of questions, and hopefully more answers in the near future.

Onlive, which could revolutionize the game industry, is a interesting propsition with a lot of great ideas, but it will be interesting to see how things play out. Expect a lot of news on Onlive at GDC and E3 ’2010.

I’m sorry but I’m tapped out. I own a xbox360 and PS3. I don’t need another console thats going to give me the same games I can get on these.

i agree with you slinx, i think they came into this gen to late there are already millions of consoles sold across all 3 platforms. i think the need for another console is minimal at best

If they would have launched this at the same time as ps3/360 they would get the sales. I have only a small interest in this and need more details. I already have a gamefly membership so this may seem dumb

So it’s $15 a month for the ability to play the games you own or rent.

Total FAIL on so many levels and let’s not even talk about the bandwidth requirements.

$14.95 monthly subscription fee, is just not gonna happen with me. They need to introduce a 6 month subscription and/or a 12 month service. Similar to how current MMO billing cycles are where you get a discount for the lengthier subscriptions. Also if your paying that much a month then there definitely needs to be a price discount on games to purchase even to rent.
