I had a long talk with James Hawk, group manager for Games Platform Business Development today. I wanted to get all the details on the new Game Room they plan on launching. Here are some things you should know:
- Pricing should be $2-3 dollars per game per system or $5 for both versions of the game. You can literally log in while you at work just to beat someone’s score.
- They eventually want to emulate all games. Yep, every single arcade and classic console game ever made. Think of Virtual Console on steroids. They mentioned their interest in Dreamcast emulation as well. They want to get the product out first and then start beefing up the library after they see how well it does.
- It’s not only for Gold members. The service is free to Gold and Silver members, you only have to pay for the games.
- Games will have achievements. Games from the fucking 80′s will have ACHIEVEMENTS!!
- If you don’t own a certain game and your friend who does own it challenges you, you can play it one time for free.
- Even though there is a ranking mode that updates to Xbox Live leaderboards, you still get to post high scores on your personal arcade and only your friends can beat them. If one of your friends beats your high score, it will show on a banner above the game so you’ll know exactly which games you should play.
That is all. I have a full audio interview but haven’t listened to it yet. If the quality is good I’ll post it. This is the most exciting gaming news of the year for me. I was just talking about how it’s too bad that a lot of gamers never got a chance to go to the arcade. Well now you can. Look for a Spring launch of Game Room.

I could already play all of those and many more on MAME if I wanted… That said, scanning through the list, I’d quite fancy having a quick go on Star Raiders on the Atari 2600 again. I’ll be more excited about seeing Dreamcast games if that actually happens. My DC is currently set up & ready to play in addition to PS3, X360 and Wii. It’d be good to put it aside. I’d have to ask though, how would the X360 emulate the VMU displays? Some of the games that made use of the VMU’s actually made good use of them. Of course DC games were rumoured as coming to PSN as well, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if & when that happens.

Uhh not big news if you ask me. Typically MS to have to rely on other consoles games to make up for their lack of games. Have fun playing atari 2600 while I play God Of War 3 Gran Turismo 5 and Heavy Rain. Also why would MS bring a bunch of old games when 90% of their users are where born after 1980.
Have fun playing PS3 while I’m playing Tempest, Scramble and Crystal Castles. See what I did there? Sounds really fucking stupid doesn’t it.
I’m very excited for gameroom. There’s only a handful of dreamcast games I would like but it’s all about arcade titles. Awesome job ms gameroom is just another service to live just like home is a service for the psn.How could a gamer not like the idea of gameroom.
Wow, I see Mircosoft is serious about this. That is why it has my interest. They don’t make features and leave them in “beta” for a year and do nothing to improve them. I will be sure to check this out. It seems like they are going to channel the atmosphere and “feeling” of the “ideal” arcade cats were talking about 2 warzone ago. We shall have to wait and see.

I have all the atari games, nes and all other on my pc but being able to chat with friends while playing them and competing for the top score is an awesome thing. I want ms pacman pole position Galaga metal slug would be so much fun pong- with chat and a leader board arkaniod Bomberman original pc prince of Persia Spyhunter crazy taxi old dos games would be nice also. Tobin, kings quest I hope ms expands their catalog beyond atarti and intelli so many other.
This is a stupid misleading post, they show interest but SEGA already hooked that up with SONY and HOME. Sorry Tor you will need to play HOME to play Dreamcast, it won’t be on 360.

@ JOEY While nothing has been official a couple of months ago i remember a leaked SCEA document being posted on the net. It specifically stated SCEA and Sega was negotiating a long-term exclusivity deal for some titles in return for offering additional marketing support for said titles. So keep tuned for future news on that deal….
