Universal Studios Home Entertainment (USHE) announced today the introduction of groundbreaking dual-format discs containing both Blu-ray Hi-Def and DVD versions of some of Hollywood’s most iconic films. The new “flipper” discs will launch on January 19, 2010 with the blockbuster superspy thrillers The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, starring Matt Damon, premiering as individually packaged Blu-ray discs.
For the first time ever, consumers will have the ability to choose between Blu-ray and DVD formats, simply by flipping a single disc. With complete utility in one convenient package, the revolutionary medium can be used on any DVD or Blu-ray compatible player, game platform or computer, making it ideal for anyone planning to upgrade to Blu-ray at a future date as well as current owners of both Blu-ray and DVD systems. Each side of Universal’s flipper discs includes the entire movie as well as all available bonus features, with the Blu-ray side featuring BD exclusives such as U-Control and BD-Live.
“Universal’s flipper discs are the perfect way for consumers to future-proof their collections while still enjoying their favorite movies on all their existing DVD players,” said Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. “The flipper disc offers an easy way for viewers to convert to Blu-ray now or at any time in the future, confident in the fact they will be able to experience their home entertainment purchases in the highest quality picture and sound when they do.”
The release will mark the first time the “Bourne” trilogy, one of the highest-grossing action movie franchises in history, is available individually in Blu-ray’s renowned perfect picture and purest digital sound. Each film is accompanied by an array of exciting bonus features that plunge viewers deeper in to the shadowy world of international espionage, including top-secret files, challenging strategy games, fascinating filmmakers and actor profiles, commentary, deleted scenes and Universal’s renowned BD-Live functionality.

I don’t see why they haven’t been doing this already…. and I don’t see how this has anything to do with the 360… since it deals with digital distribution. Your acting like the flipper tech is going to just move dvds off the shelf but the chances of this ever happening are slim… and if it did… we would be into the next gen of consoles again with new tech… so it probably won’t matter.
On the terms of Natal which you brought up…. this is MS crack at repositioning their product if you look into business practices, on the product life cycle the 360 has hit maturity and may be getting close to its decline stage…. so Natal is their attempt to reposition itself to attract a new market of audience and keep itself in the growth/maturity stages of the life cycle etc………..
o btw these flippers shouldn’t make too big of a deal right now because a lot of blu rays come with the dvd and the digital copy in the case….. so until the flipper tech is cheap enough to attract dvd/bluray buyers it wont be worth it……Will be nice to see it happen eventually though.
good point oog
i have disneys up and bolt both come with blu ray and standard dvd
also copy to put on your ipod or whatever
Correct me if I’m wrong, didn’t HD-DVD offer the same feature for there disks YEARS AGO?
LOL yeap, you are right. HD-DVD did it first but where was HHG to hype that shit? HD-DVD would of destroyed Blu-Ray if they paid HHG to sell it. LOL Why dont you just do infomercials?
“This Blu-ray is the next revolution leap in technology! This shit is crack yo! Buy it now with only 5 easy payments of $9.99″
correct me if i’m wrong but didnt blu ray kill HD-DVD already???? LOL! these xbots are pissed off.
Why do you always have to tell the non-believers “I told you so”? It’s ok to do that, but you do it ALL THE TIME! I think people have learned now that some of your stuff comes true.
BTW, I changed the title because this has absolutely nothing to do with the 360. The 360 still plays DVD’s, still plays Netflix and still plays movies in 1080p. Sony isn’t getting a boost, customers are. Now customers(not unlike the ones who bought UP or Monsters Inc.) get to buy a movie one time and have it available on all formats. HD-DVD was doing this two years ago. It’s about time Blu-Ray has caught up. It also goes to show you that HD-DVD tech was ahead of it’s time. Again, this has nothing to do with the 360.
- 360 isn’t at a disadvantage. Neither is the Wii. One console isn’t at a disadvantage because of another console. A console is just a piece of hardware.
- Is this article about Universal’s press release or is it about how Sony is eventually gonna take over? Aren’t we tired of hearing this rhetoric?
- PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player, but it’s not the only Blu-Ray player. I have a Blu-ray/HD-DVD combo player in my HD editing system.
- PS3 does everything…except play PS2 games, which was promised from the beginning. So now people have to re-buy their PS2’s after selling them to get a PS3. Great business move by Sony.
- Sony can’t beat the 360 in 2010. Microsoft can’t beat the PS3 in 2010. A company can’t beat a piece of hardware in a single year.
- It seems like ALLLL of your vidicles always fall into an unpaid Sony marketing advertisement. It’s old already. Give us some real gaming news.
- Real recognize real.
Thank you Tor and I was about to say that. HHG needs to stop being a marketing person for Sony he is not getting paid for. He needs to grow up and stop the bullshit rhetoric he comes out of his mouth. I take that back, I do believe him, but if he going to be a famous gaming journalism, he has to fair all cross the board, being a fanboy for the PS3. Great comment Tor and take care.

Wow really. You do realize ps3 had this feature. Just because they took it out of their newest console doesnt mean they lied to customers.

While I sort of agree, I still feel that ms or sony can be beaten by one another based on the number of quality games released on each console.
WOW!!!! – It seems like ALLLL of your vidicles always fall into an unpaid Sony marketing advertisement. It’s old already. Give us some real gaming news.
I have not posted in a while but the 360 plays dvds hiphop also hd dvds so they are
really not missing anything.Also download.
But with that being said i buy more blu ray movies then ps3 games.
its like a 3 to 1 ratio.
YOU Always talk about how you report news why no little video about how many
ppl went out in spent money on video games black frida
Instead you want to keep going back to 360 ps3 battle.
Bring ppl together hiphop not start up the fanboys.
How does This have anything to do with the 360 ? everytime hhg makes a vidicle and posts it to n4g the discussion in the comments is very rarely about the articles content and more about his headlines or him.
hey hiphop it is way too soon to give the xbots more bad news after what happen on black friday. they are still morning the ass kicking that microsoft just took.
@torrence
you dont waste any time coming to the xbox defense do you? and why do you always bring up the point the ps3 slim dont play ps2 games? i think everybody know this by now. that fact is as dead as the xbox failure rate but you dont like to talk about that.
i hope on the warzone you talk about the black friday hardware numbers. cause the last show not one word on the npd hardware sales was mention. i wonder why ?????? LOL!
Ur an IDIOT.
Ur a grown as man argueing about which console is better leave that for the 14 year olds.
As for Black Friday the Wii won 550,000.
I only own a PS3 and I’m very satisfied with, i don’t give a fuk what system people own.
PSN: YoungJuvi
i never said any console was better than the other. what are you talking about??
lol juvi dont mind this troll. this is a same guy that got banned and begged torrence to come back. What kind of loser begs to come back to site he got banned from…
mike i would just like to inform you that the npd numbers are only from a select number of retailers. such as gamestop, gamecrazy, walmart, bestbuy, target etc.
there are tons of other stores that sell hardware/software that are not even being tracked.
i never begged tor for anything. you people believe every word that torrence say if you want. i wonder how many of you fools went and bought that wack army game (conter point??) after he hype it to hell. LOL!
