Perhaps what it all boils down to is nostalgia. Every gamer experiences a period in their lifetime that they would consider their personal “golden age” of gaming. For me it was the SNES days, for you Torrence I’m guessing it ranges from early 80s on the Atari to early 90s on the Genesis/Saturn. And frankly, a lot of games have ‘wow’ed me since the SNES days, but no matter what nothing will top games like FFVI or Super Metroid. You don’t need eye-popping cinematics and a live orchestra to impress me, midi format and sprites will do just fine.

No one should be ashamed of what they consider their golden age of gaming, but everyone should be educated on what came before. Really cool show, looking forward to being taught some more gaming history.

Well put man, this was actually a game I have never seen before to be honest, so ya.. definitely you should make sure you know what came before everything, good stuff you got going on Torrence, hope to see more.

    Retrovision FTW!

Also worth mentioning is that back then there was no internet to go look up how to beat the game.

That looks fun to me. I’d play it. It’s like an old school puzzle game. I think you have to have a really good imagination to recognize that bridge as a bridge.

I remember when games used to be hard back in the day. Now they are all pretty much easy because people love to whine about a games difficulty. I’m so glad we have trophies and achievements now so some of those slackers will go that extra mile. I love when people come up with their own challenges for games to make them harder. I played RE4(GC) so much that I could beat the entire game with the handgun on professional except for this one part where it was mandatory that I used a specific weapon (no spoilers).

Some of my proudest moments were beating Emerald and Ruby in FFVII, Eternal Champions, Weaponlord, getting the best rank on DMD in DMC1 and maxing out every character in FFX and acquiring 99 of every item I could no matter how long it took. I nearly died when someone stole my PS2 and games. I miss that memory card the most. I devoted so much of my time to those games.

To this day I still play NES, SNES, Genesis & N64 games.

look, i’m constantly playing old school games, but after seeing that video, i lol’d.

if that’s what made people happy back in the day, that’s great. and if that’s what helped jump start video games, that’s also great. but you won’t ever catch me playing an Atari lol. the NES is as far back as i go.

No offense, even though i din’t any games except this I won’t even touch, I’ll just go outside and chill man this game is just not for me/not my type. I would prob explode in my own house trying to figure out how to get the river shit and key shit lol nawww mann but its cool/interesting seeing some people enjoy it.

i started gaming with the nes, and at some point i would rather SOME kind of realistic reference like mario, u knew it was a little person ya know? but i hear ya those were the days, i remember playing ultimate stunt man day in and day out…

counting pixels or res is stupid… as long as the game looks and plays good I’m all set… and by good I’d say at least socom confrontations standards or army of two…

better graphics just immerse ME so much more but i can understand those who it doesn’t have as great an effect…
in the end i’d like all of the above in my games please ! lol

This is a first gen Atari 2600 game. Activision and Imagic quickly raised the visual standard of Atari 2600 games.

Gameplay and story are most important to me. Graphics is just icing on the cake.

I agree with Chad in that the games that we have an affinity for are directly influenced by the time period in which we grew up. That is to say that, if you were today to sit a twelve year old in front of a 19″ tv, the ones with the big asses and faded colors we are going retro, and give him a copy of Super Mario Bros. and a Nintendo, he would look at you like you were retarded. That look however, is not due to Super Mario Bros. being a bad game, but a response to seeing something that he now views as being inferior. When do we ever play games on retro systems that came out before we started gaming? Aside from situations like these when someone is trying to make show us something… My point is that each generation develops an affinity to “old” games that were cutting edge and fun when they were growing up. For me, the “old” game I loved and grew up playing was Super Mario Brother’s. At 28 years of age now, I sat my twelve year old nephew in front it, to show him where games he plays now came from (Mario Galaxy). Do you know what he did…that’s right, he looked at me like i was retarded.

Well, Torrence just sat us down folks…look at him like he is retarded. Just kidding, but I hope you get what I am saying. Times change, technology changes, (who wants to play on black/white tv’s) even people change, but in the end Torrence is right, gameplay will always be the biggest factor on which games are fun today, and then nine or ten years down the line which of thoes games are still fun. Ten years from now CoD:MW will look like ass, but i still won’t mind popping a few heads because the gameplay will still be fun. It’s really late and I am sleepy but I wanted to make a Hiphopgamer analogy in reference to why “young” people don’t appreciate “old” games…Take two really really old people right. Two really really old people that are in love with each other sooooooo much and have been married for 20 something years. The husband will always always tell his wife how pretty and beautiful she is, and if they still fucking he probably still fucks her face to face saying how beautiful she is with her legs sprawled out in the air. Now, if this old man was to tell you about how beautiful, fun and smart his wife was, you could try to imagine it, you might tell the old man, yeah she is beautiful, but deep down you know she is wrinkly, dull and cenile. Why, because you didn’t know her while she was young fun and beautiful you only know her as the old nasty bitch that’s fucking your grandfather.
