    torrence sucks at COD4. haha

  • jthamind1 says:

ok, where are the people on the show getting the idea that Sony launched earlier than they originally planned? i mean, i heard HHG say that they would’ve liked to have launched in ‘07 or ‘08, wtf? and i think Torrence said something about them wanting to launch later than ‘06, too, but i can’t remember and i don’t feel like going back and searching lol.

anyway, where the hell is this info coming from? i’ll quote direct from a source; The Race For a New Game Machine, which is the book written by two people who were directly involved with the development of the Cell. In fact, David Shippy (one of the authors of the book) was the lead developer/designer of the team. anyway, this is just from the inside cover of the book:

“The tough road to market started in 2001 when Shippy assembled the talent to design the chip for Sony’s hotly anticipated Playstation 3 game console, planned for a late 2005 release. In 2003, a gigantic wrench was thrown into the operation in the form of Microsoft–the software behemoth wanted the STI team’s microprocessor for its own XBox 360 and targeted Christmas 2005, as well.”

so yeah, Sony initially planned to launch A YEAR EARLIER, so i wanna know where people are getting the idea that they wanted to launch LATER than 2006. i forget what all the hangups were as to why they couldn’t launch in ‘05 like they planned, and i don’t feel like scouring the book to find it, but if i remember correctly, some of it had to do with the problems of designing all the Cell stuff and the testing that needed to be done, plus the fact that they got done later than expected and didn’t have time to send developers working stuff they needed in order to started programming games that would be ready for their planned launch.

  • That’s RIGHT! They were going to launch earlier, but the system got delayed! There was all this talk that it was rushed out but that was just fanboy fodder. Interesting. I hope HHG reads this.

  • DragonWarrior4 says:

Yay! The warzone is up! I can’t wait to listen to me and hip hop go at it as soon as my hangover is over with.

  • jthamind1 says:

Torrence, i remember what you used to call those gamers. it wasn’t “casual hardcore gamers,” it was “hardcore casual gamers.” cause i remember that episode where you were talking about a friend you had who got a 360 and got Madden and CoD4 or w/e and that’s all they play and they’re great at them. but overall they’re casual gamers, they’re just hardcore at those games. or something like that.

  • DominicanNinja says:

didnt the ps3 have better sales in the first two years than the 360.i think the ps3 would be ahead but only by like 2 or 3 million and 360 gamers would still buy more games than ps3 gamers lol

  • OOG says:

Yo Tor I beat that…. well I beat it all in Veteran my first day b4 I touched online…..

There is a bit of timing involved in that level that your playing Tor… but its not a timing issue as much as it is pacing… I cant really remember exactly how I went through the level but I think I went right… up until the concrete stairs etc.. and then jumped to the left side… and run down that side and then when you get to the woods… shoot the people to the right and move fast while using trees to protect you… I cant remember the exact details of the level so yea….

Have fun with Mile High Veteran…. lol

  • OrochinagiZER0 EX says:

Yeah. The PS3 was supposed to have launched in 2005 but it behind the scenes in planning stages. Blu-Ray was the catalyst for the platform which lead to the delay. Another reason was that originally the Ps3 was supposed to have two Cell processors, one for CPU purposes and one for GPU purposes. Ironically the biggest antagonist behind Sony’s Cell technology, Intel will implement this realization with their 12 core Lambaree. If the 360 would have launched in 2006, Sony would’ve crushed them by default. Don’t forget how the industry back in ‘06 was defaulting the 360 as “another Dreamcast”. Microsoft knows this better than anyone. That’s why they launched a year earlier because according to them, the only reason Sony won last generation (the 6th for those counting) is because of the “18th month head start” and “first to market”, which the irony of it all, they discounted the Sega Dreamcast in the process of that statement. (one of many reasons to fuck Microshit). Don’t forget that the PS2 was outselling them. Watch the 2006 E3 Press Conference and watch how Peter Moore’s attitude on stage was very aggressive (HD-DVD, stealing exclusives, cheap imitations of Sony’s first party titles i.e. Forza) Speaking of HD DVD, the ONLY reason Microsoft “supported” that format was to slow the adoption rate of Blu-Ray. Back in ‘05 Itagaki wanted Microsoft to add HD DVD to the 360 as he stated that the trailer for Dead of Alive 4 was 2GB.

    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/dead-or-alive-creator-criticises-xbox-360-disc-format

Also Bill Gates stated that the HD DVD vs Blu-Ray format was to be the last.

“For us it’s not the physical format. Understand that this is the last physical format there will ever be. Everything’s going to be streamed directly or on a hard disk. So, in this way, it’s even unclear how much this one counts.”

Yeah it did came out in the form of The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess back in 2006 for both the GAMECUBE and Wii. That right there when I listened you state that, proved Jon’s point that “hardcore gamers” (such a joke of a term) didn’t give a fuck about the GAMECUBE NOR the Nintendo 64 for that matter. Remember the term “kiddie console”, “kiddie machine”, “kiddie system”, etc. Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros. Melee, F-Zero GX, etc were ironically the most difficult versions of their IPs. I’ve heard the same bullshit about Nintendo for almost 18 years now.

Nintendo Super Nintendo= not serious enough
Nintendo 64= catridge, no games, kiddie.
    Nintendo GAMECUBE= small discs, kiddie.
Nintendo Wii= casual, no HD graphics, motion control bad

Hardcore gamers do not determine the success of a platform. Holla at Microsoft about that one. Hardcore gamer. The only thing hardcore is you guys’ bullshit. I got my copy of Ryu Ga Gotoku 3. Where’s your’s?

    • Da_Dios says:

I stopped with Gamecube…. When Sony added backwards compatibility with the PS2 i was instantly sold! I felt like Nintendo was pushing to become the Apple of gaming and their non-sense peripherals. The gamecube controller sucked balls, sure i got used to it but playing at a friends house who had PS2/Xbox with games such as soul calibur and playing on the gamecube it was just stupid. You had to get used to playing with those retarded ass c buttons. N64 controller flaw was the dumb ass Z button and where they placed it. I loved the 64 game selection wise i have no quarrels gamecube though i had the smallest library of games for. The Wii is a different beast altogether no one can blame them for cornering the casual market they tapped into it EVERY OTHER developer is trying to capture it as well and as a result we see some bullshit i.e Ubisoft….

  • Da_Dios says:

LOL @ hiphop making up an erroneous number like 4 million!

Even though it’s not reality and it’s subjective i agree with hiphop that Sony would be outselling Microsoft if they both dropped in the same year. Like many like to attribute and fall back on, the numbers support that claim. In the same time span meaning in each consoles first 2-3 years (even though Sony’s third year isn’t quite here yet) the PS3 actually has sold more consoles than the 360. We can think and hope that other events would have or wouldn’t have happened but just take the numbers for what they are… Like Tor said real numbers show that, even though i hate using VGchartz as a reference but in 31 months or 134 weeks the ps3 has sold 22,543,747 and the 360 sold 19,104,907 since 2006 we don’t know how they would have fared head to head in 06 but using the sales SINCE 06 could be a start. I think everyone missed the mark on it honestly. Saying If this and If that really diluted the dibate. Why even consider HD-DVD being included inside the 360 when it wasn’t? That wasn’t a spec for the system and was always just an add on. Saying Gears would be a launch title is a what IF you can’t assume that we don’t know what EPIC would have done in that time frame. When you do something like that you need to try to keep everything as consistent as possible. Meaning each launch would have consisted of the titles they had at their launch and each system would have the same features they had when they launch. Adding the other If’s and bullshit just dilute and kill the original debate topic of both releasing at the same time.

I’ll listen to the rest later…

PS3 selling slower than original Xbox in US
      Friday, 12 Jun 2009 17:08
Original Xbox The Nintendo Wii is officially the fastest selling home console in the US, but the PlayStation 3 is selling slower than the original Xbox and only slightly faster than Nintendo’s GameCube.

You might have noticed in our May NPD report that the Nintendo Wii had surpassed 20 million units in the US, officially becoming the fastest selling home video games console in the region.

At the same 31 month mark in April 2003, the PlayStation 2 had achieved 17,360,000, whereas the Nintendo Wii has achieved 20,203,581, according to numbers provided by the NPD Group

After 31 months on the market the Xbox 360 had achieved 10,267,000 units, with the console now reaching 15,240,286 after 43 months. This compares favourably to Microsoft’s first Xbox effort, which reached 8,901,402 units at 31 months and 12,200,000 after 43.

As for the PlayStation 3, Sony’s latest console is now at 7,749,396 after 31 months on the US market. This is less than the original Xbox and only slightly larger than the GameCube in May 2004 (7,473,241). When compared to the PlayStation 2’s 17,360,000 it’s an especially sorry sight, emphasising the need for a PS3 price-cut, which is expected in August

        Question….

Why would we limit it to just the US when there is 6 other continents…. US is probably the biggest market but excluding the rest would be an injustice.

        • mboojigga says:

I wasn’t limiting anything. Just simply pointing out that in the U.S. the growth has slowed as the article points out where the PS3 is at today in comparison. But it is relevant just like the news out of the U.K that the 360 is leading in 2009

“GFK/Chart Track UK: Xbox 360 leads sales in 1st half of 2009″

Here in the States, we’ve grown accustomed to certain luxuries: subsidized gasoline for our free Hummers (hey, gotta stimulate that economy!); a complimentary 72oz soda with every purchase (just buy anything!); a lifetime supply of type 2 diabetes; and, of course, monthly updates from NPD charting the sales numbers of the major video game consoles. Our friends in the UK aren’t so fortunate. So when we get a peek behind that curtain, we look to share it with you.

And here, courtesy of UK retailer GAME’s first-half fiscal statement, we find data from GfK Chart-Track for sales up to June 27th, 2009. Unsurprisingly, Nintendo is in the lead with the DS, having sold 2.7m in the past year, bringing its total up to 9.1m units (that includes 300,000 DSi units sold since launch). The Wii is in second place with 5.4m, up 2.3 from last year. And then we get to the main attraction: 360 and PS3 sales.

You’ll recall that in February, Microsoft claimed the 360 bested the PS3 in overall European sales by 1m units, citing GfK Chart-Track data again. In the UK, the Xbox is siting pretty with 3.9m units, up 1.7 from last year, while the PS3 is at 2.2m, up 900k from last year (and, coincidentally, right where Microsoft would’ve been a year ago). In between the “big boys” is the PSP, with 3.3m consoles sold, up 500k from last year.

It’s weird: despite their genetic differences (three stomachs? gross!) the video game shopping trends of UK citizens sound an awful lot like those in the States

          • Da_Dios says:

My point was the whole world factors into the consoles success some markets more than others. I’m more intereseted in the WW numbers than i am in just the JP or US or EU numbers seperately. Not saying those articles aren’t relevant just that they are a small piece of the large pie. If just looking at the US article you can see where some of the ignorance that gets posted on N4G is rooted from with the whole “The PS3 is doomed” or “Can Sony Survive” bullshit. Some would read that and than base an entire conclusion that Sony failed and will drop out. Yes Sony’s growth in the US has exactly took flight but i think their WW sales reflect on the success of the platform in contrast to the region.

          • mboojigga says:

I am interested in Worldwide numbers too. But we don’t get those until MS or Sony actually provide that info. The only sources we have that are close to accurate is NPD and Chart Track. I don’t personally care for VGcharts myself. I don’t even pay the doom and gloom articles because they are mainly opinion pieces but we have seen them go both ways. Up until just before E3 we either read about the 360 has no games or the 360 is maxed out etc etc.

      • HueyNewton2009 says:

mboojigga lol Cheaper Console= more sales, that is it. It does not mean the 360 is a better or the PS3 is not a good console. 360 is generally purchased more then the PS3 due to its price and it had 2 year head start. I owned 2 360’s one died and the other one i traded in when it started freezing. So i was like shit i can afford quality so i traded in my second 360 right before it bricked for a PS3 because it started the whole freezing thing. Sales do matter only when it comes to non exclusive titles because the PS3 sometimes get the crappy version of ported games because the game makers use the 360 platform to develop due to there being more 360 owners.

All i know it that i haven’t had any issues wit the PS3 and the exclusives are unmatched. I may purchase another 360 for Splinter Cell if the hardware is updated because MY experiences with the hardware has been frustrating to say the least. Well informed working adults buy the PS3 for its QUALITY AND DEPENDABILITY, the 360 is pushed and marketed to the younger generation meaning kids. Johnny’s mother will buy him the 200.00 console before she buys the 400.00 console. But if i bought the 360 it would equal the same price or more than the 40 gig ps3. I would have to purchase the wireless router cuz my home office is connected and my HD plasma TV is downstairs, year subscription of live (50.00) and a hard drive which cost 60.00 to 150.00 depending on the size. So when u add it up u get a cost of 410.00 plus tax and that’s with purchasing a arcade version with a 20 gig refurbished hard drive lol. Adults who are ex 360 owners switched over because they have the money and you get all those features included with free online. Microsoft does a excellent job of making inpatient consumers think they are getting a cheaper product when they are actually not. IMO with the failure rates it doesn’t make any fking sense to own both consoles because buying faulty tech when you know its going to have a really short life span is a bad investment. 2 1/2 years later with zero issues and great exclusives i am having the best time gaming since Sega genesis and quake 1 and counterstrike and its only going to get better.

        • mboojigga says:

Well I must be a well informed working adult then since I own a PS3.

As for the rest of your post it seems pretty pointless. So you went through 2 consoles that died on you or froze up…..okay…..so? I own 20 gig(Dec 05 launch console) Halo 3 edition(120 gig added on) and a 60 gig 360. I also own an 80gig PS3 with BC and here I am a consumer that has yet to experience RROD or any problems with my 360’s or YLOD or Blu-Ray issues with my PS3. Face it your in the minority of consumers who have had issues with their consoles. Consumers that own PS3 are no different in how they feel about their system then 360 owners that had issues.

You can come up with whatever numbers you heard of about RROD when consumers are still buying the 360 and it isn’t simply because of the price the way you put it. People are buying all versions of the 360 just like they are buying the 40 or 80 gig PS3’s. They are also buying the accesories like the hardrives and controllers. Damn they are spending money on Rockband so what makes you think consumers care about your break down of how much it cost to get started. Your not the first person to BREAK IT DOWN about the cost and make it sound like it is so expensive. Once again MS decided giving consumers options to get what they need when they are ready. Sony decided to give you everything they wanted. Sony started with that strategy and look at what they have done since launch. They first stated they were not even going to offer multiple sku models at E3 05 when MS introduced the 360. Come E3 06 we saw Sony decided to offer a 20 and 60 gig sku.
Since then we have seen Sony move away from the everything in the box to where we are today to save cost on the system. One company has not taken any features out of the box while the other company is steady taking features groups you can no longer get now. Nobody can walk in a store and get the 80gig model I have with the amount of USB ports and memory slots today. You can’t walk in the store and get backwards compatibility with the emotion engine on the launch models. Sony took it out because their plan hasn’t worked out like they expected. They have sold alot but not enough to be where they though they would be by now. They were not expecting to be in 3rd place.

I have a sob story too if you want to call it that. I went through 3 PS2’s and either the door jammed on the fat PS2’s or I had to put my PS2 slim upside down in order to read the disc because the door would not stay closed after just a year. Non of those stopped me from playing the PS2 because I enjoyed the games that came with it and “as a hard working and well imformed consumer” I took the OPTION of getting a PRP(Product Replacement Plan) for my systems that I have decided to do on the 360 and PS3’s that I own now. So I decided to pay extra money for the convience to go down to Best Buy give them my broke shit and walk out the door with a new one.

So it doesn’t matter that I have yet to have any issues with my systems today just like it didn’t matter that I went through 3 PS2 models back in the day. The games is why I bought them and it wasn’t becuase of the price. Just like 50 dollars didn’t stop me in 2002 until today playing Xbox Live on my Xbox and 360.

Oh and they have deals out there for us consumers to find and it is easy to look around since I am renewing on the 20th for Live I looked around and got this deal here:

          12 Month Live Card = 44.96
          Wired Head Set = 19.99
          PGR4 = 19.99
          Messenger Kit= 24.99
          800 Points (if a card existed) = $10

          Total individually = 119.93
          Total bundled = $55.96
          That’s $63.97 saved.

      Spencer,

I was only posting a response that was in relation to the comments here and to the discussion in the Warzone this past week. My view about the trend of how fast the PS3 is selling seems to not have any benefit on the end result which is today. Many analyst who saw this trend about how fast the PS3 was selling in comparison to the 360 came up with projectiona that it would catch up by (insert any year after 2007)
Now you have Pachter who people love to qoute for whatever reason is now saying by 2015 the PS3 will outsell the 360 which he credits Blu-Ray being that reason. The article also points out that it doesn’t factor the affects of Natal or Sony’s motion device.

In the end to us gamers it doesn’t matter. It is all part of the discussion that doesn’t affect me personally in anyway. I own both consoles.

      • Spencer Thompson says:

  • Da_Dios says:

I can’t believe no one mentioned this the majority of the Wii USER base is made of casual gamers. So when a “hardcore” or more mature game is sold on the platform and doesn’t sell as well as the other shovelware the reason is because of how many gamers that own a Wii are interested in that type of game. You’ll have people who like Torrence who will support it but the casual market doesn’t care. It’s a reason there called casual. Fat said right and everyone ignored it, yes some of those casual gamers may turn hardcore but it will happen over time and it won’t be the majority of the fan base. Also third party titles aren’t really making alot of money off of Nintendo really Nintendo is making all the money with their first party titles. I knew exactly what Nintendo was aiming for and it’s the exact same reason why i didn’t purchase it and i seen it happening with the gamecube. I play the Wii sometimes when i go visit friends who do have it. I’ve played Mario, Zelda, Wii sports, Metroid, no more heroes and others… Just because people who don’t own the Wii bitch about the games that are being shoved out doesn’t mean we don’t speak or at least relate with those who do have the system and are drowned out from the majority of the casuals who aren’t purchasing or requesting better shit. Not all Wii games are bad it’s just that some of bullshit be produced and sold like Wii sports resorts. If you really want to be real i think if the game was on PSN/XBL it resorts would have just been made as add-on DLC but because we talking about nintendo and how they historically have done things (Mario Kart for the Wii) are pushing the same game out with new events basically. Yah Archery and Frisbee! It’s already selling like crazy. The real problem we all want NOT to happen is for hardcore gamers to be forgotten it’s cool to have a casual market but lets not say fuck you. According to Jon Shaw Nintendo said fuck hardcore….
