thats sucks.I have a LG Electronics 37LC7D 37 LCD HD TV and its fucking awesome

Yea, I was totally bummed! Having worked in game testing for a long while, I just had to test out multiple scenarios, TVs, and all that.

A friend has a 2 year (possibly older) LG and it definitely doesn’t suffer from the same problems!

I’ve got the lowest-end Samsung series 5 46″ LCD, and it’s really excellent overall. The two stark negatives I would point out about it are sound quality (quite poor for a “home theater” set, it totally requires at least a decent surround setup) and black levels. You can’t really set or tune for true black, or you’ll pretty much crush your colorwash in scenes where you have sharp blacks contrasting with bright colors. The blacks will literally eat everything else. Tune to avoid this and it’s fine.

    Hey Jon,

As my upcoming post on my HD experiences over the past few years will show, I also tried out the Samsung 46A550 (5 Series). The sound quality issue seems pretty universal amongst the various HDTVs – it’s almost like HDTV makers partner with surround sound makers, “We’ll intentionally put weak speakers in our sets, so that our users will require your sound products to get the ‘Full HD’ Home-theatre experience.”

I liked the picture quality of the A550, but the semi-mattte/semi-gloss screen was distracting for me (which is why Torrence now owns the much more glossy A650 that I had originally bought before the A550). I didn’t have the A550 long enough to mess with (or really observe) the black level issues you mention.

    Thanks for your insight!
