Warzone #11 - Is The Wii In Direct Competition With The 360 & PS3??

On this episode we got into a huge debate over whether or not the Wii was competing with the 360 & PS3. This went on for a good 10 minutes and it’s what the Warzone is all about. Also on this show:

Yo great show guys. Hey i have to add my two cents in this wii competition debate. First off regardless of price, regardless of extra features, regardless of any thing else the wii, ps3, and 360 are video game machines and every thing else second. So regardless of those extra features they are in direct competition. Second thats like saying the psp is not competing with ds. we know the psp has more features and better graphics then the ds but its still competing with the ds in the handheld market. Console market the three consoles are in direct competition because when there is a market that they are competing for and currently nintendo holds 50% of the market and and the other 50% microsoft and sony are competing for. You can go to what if what if all day but what if doesnt matter its about what it is. The wii came out and did what it did and took the market away with out having to up the price and without having all those extra features. Third the people you me and torrence know that don’t play there wiis that much don’t even make up 1% of wii install base so that argument is irrelevant. The wii is still sold out and still selling twice as much as the other two and those people that don’t have the money to own all three it is a direct competition so it doesnt matter what perception is or what we think is cooler. Men lie women lie numbers don’t and the wii is killing the game regardless of what me you or any one else thinks and if the wii was not in the market right now sony and microsoft would have bigger numbers. Remember this is not a popularity contest its a buisness and nintendo is cashing in the big numbers while the other two are fighting hard to catch up, they say they arent in direct competition because sony and microsoft know they have along way to even break even with the wii. The wii is a factor regardless. What ifs are just that what ifs and not reality!

Yo man i didn’t mean Sega didn’t make any great games i was just curious within the lifespan of Sega how many great games for a series there was.i think they’ve been going for 20 years or so.my guess was around 5 great games into a series.sorry if it sounded like i was dissing Sega man.I wasn’t.Sega used to be a great developer.

about you talking about the whole not going to buy madden thing.to me it sounds like when ff7 went to ps1 and all the Nintendo fans were upset because it wasn’t on the Nintendo, or someone holding out on buying a ps3 or 360 because they hate the company itself so to me it kind of sounds like fanboyism BUT I DO see were your coming from with madden stealing the license thing.

if you add up the ps3 and 360 together as 1 gaming console with no competition it will average around the same as the wii.
THAT’S WHY I BELIEVE THE WII ISN’T DIRECT COMPETITION.they are competition but not direct competition.
See there goes the what ifs, and you cant do what ifs you can only do what is, microsoft and sony are not one company, and its not only two companies fighting for videogame market share, its 3. So are you trying to tell me that psp and ds are not in direct competition? Psp is more for hardcore and ds is for casual if you want to get technical about it. when its all said in done thats what sony was trying to do is take some of the handheld market away from nintendo thus giving nintendo competition in the handheld market. like i said its not a hard core, casual, or popularity contests thats some thing we as consumers bring in to picture, from a business stand point which is what the console war really is before fanboys turned it into something more its about market share and profitability, something that nintendo is leading in as of now. So to say that you dont want that top spot and arent competing for that top spot in market and profit share is stupid and is not what the 3 companies are about. They regardless of what any of us want to believe are in direct competition with each other, if they wasnt you wouldnt see sony with psn titles, and games like buzz and singstar, and you wouldnt see microsoft doing the things they are doing with there new outlook. Both companies are trying to take back some of the market that nintendo ran with. If they where just hardcore systems you wouldnt see all the crap that you see on both sony and microsofts consoles.

i agree with u Torrence that the wii is in competition with ps3 and 360 however hiphop was saying that its no compettion 2 it and if the ps2 is still competition then hes right that sony never lost the crown,
also i have a wii and i havnt played it in months but i am more of a hardcore gamer than casual but i do love playing mario on it and its fun when friends come over, and i would prefere to play wii bowling than on the playstation eye

sony has had casual games all along and one that actually make money.just look at singstar.it’s total profits are 15 million total.sony has always had casual games.
if you look at the wii conference, when they came out they expanded the audience.i can’t remember the numbers because that cenference was boring as hell but they said the women audience got a huge increase when the system came out.so the people that are buying the system are mostly new to gaming from the wii comercials that stand out.i said they were competition but not direct competition.if you didn’t have any system and went to the store to buy a console would u buy something with childish games or something that has mostly mature and violent games.if your a gamer you’ll buy a next-gen console.if your a parent u will buy the wii for your kids.that’s 2.that’s 2 different types of markets.
im saying it ends up to be the same competition but it’s 2 different types of markets working for the same money.
what would u buy, Lego star wars or the new one that’s coming out with realistic graphics.the new one obviously for the gamer market and the casual market will buy the Lego one because it looks more suitable for the kids.

u have call of duty 4 on 360 and they come out with call of duty 4 on wii.now do u seriously think that’s real competition?cod4 wouldn’t sell even close to as good on the wii as the other consoles because the wii is filled with kids and casual gamers.3rd party games don’t sell good at all on the wii.a good example of that is manhunt 2.it sold good on the ps2 but sucked on the wii because the wii is filled with CASUAL gamers and kids.u can’t say a headshot on cod4 would look even remotely satisfying on the wii.the wii is and has a whole different type of audience.
Hey, I just wanted to chime in about the hdmi vs component u guys brought up…
first off, u hiphop is right, u can tell the difference, and they are VERY subtle differences, like corner text in soulcaliber4 is crisp with hdmi and blurry with composote, and it all depends on how much attention to detail individuals have.
another thing, torrance, u mentioned that u can get 1080 p with ur 360, and unless u have the elite, sorry but u can’t, and that alone is one of the differences in visuals that could make a differnece…
BUT THE MAIN aspect of my point is when u have hookup via hdmi cable options become available to u like hdmi black and full rgb color, and super white enhancements that DO definately improve the graphics on the ps3 hdmi vs ps3 component… do some deep research from a number of sources to confirm my statement as fact… Love the show!!!
see you still don’t get it dog, it aint about preception or hard core or casual yes the wii is casual but its a game machine period same as with the 360 and the ps3 when its all said and done they are game machines all that other stuff is just extra. See you are adding to that wii stereotype that its mostly women and kids that play the wii. women and kids arent the ones who stand in line at midnight launches to buy wii’s, they arent the ones who go on ebay and shell out twice what its worth to get one. Thats a hard core true gamer right there that does that stuff. Just because a game has violence and gore doesnt make it hardcore. Last time i checked hardcore gamers loved mario, zelda, metroid and games like that so how does violent games make it hardcore. casual and hardcore are not defined by games but the frequency that you play, or go after those game. I know allot of gamers that don’t like shooters or action games but they like puzzles games and platform games and they play more than i do my games, and i would still consider them hardcore. Like i said just because the people you know and some occasions on the internet you see people say they don’t play there wii still doesnt add up to 1% of the wii install base. I know personally 60 people that play there wii faithfully every day. a casual gamer is not one that is going to make programs and hacks for a wii or any console system either but you see all kinds of hacks and programs for the wii. But all this that i said and the perception of us, and opinion of whats hardcore and whats casual still doesnt even play into the fact that the wii is competition whether its direct or not direct it is cutting into the sales of both ps3 and 360 and its not about what type of gamer plays what its how can we sell our product and beat out the competition. sony said hey lets build tech and do it, microsoft said lets get more games and expand our dominance in online, and nintendo said lets have a new way to play games and undercut the competition. how is that two different things? he stated that you cant tell, and you cant unless you study the damn screen and look for minute details like that. Cause if you just walk in to a room and start watching the tv you cant automatically tell without studying the picture what you are looking at. For most normal human being who watch tv to watch tv and not study every single line and color in a picture you cant tell the difference. Just like 1080p i, and 720p you can only tell based on how far you are from the tv and the size of the tv.
Ps: i think the point he is really trying to make is that its not worth a 500 on up price difference in 1080p vs 720p and hdmi vs component. I for one am not going to get a 1080p tv for 1000 and up price difference from my current 720p TV the difference is not that big a deal to fork over that kind of money for.

i know the wii has some hardcore games like mario but it’s mostly casual and for the women playing it is not a stereotype.nintendo showed the numbers for it themselves.i said in all my comments that the wii is competition.i just said that a gamer that doesn’t have a console won’t pick the wii over a 360 or ps3, he will get the next-gen console first and then get the wii after.

you don’t speak for every one and you don’t know who is going to pick what some people don’t like what ps3 and 360 have to offer just like some people don’t like what the wii has to offer. You don’t speak for every one and you don’t know what every one looks for in a console just like every one doesnt have a hd tv so they might think its a waste of money to get a hd gaming system. Every one doesnt think the same and don’t base their purchases on the same aspect that we may base our purchase on. nintendo showed that women play the wii because they were trying to show that they bring every body into the picture when it come to gaming. Please don’t add into the bs that its only casual gamers that play the wii when its not its just the stupid lazy 3rd party developers who would rather make a quick buck with less time, effort, and work would rather make a party game instead of a real game. The fans on the wii know this and thats why they want nintendo to bring back the old seal of quality to cut down on the bullshit that is going on with development on wii. But my point is every one doesn’t want a ps3 or 360 and those that don’t arent just casual gamers they just have a different preference in gaming.

Although the systems are not in the same LEAGUE, and the demographic will sometimes overlap (ie. wii60, pswii) the wii is in somewhat of a competion… its a bit of a shade of gray…
in a scense, blueray is the same ammuniton as the wii gimmik… once/ if blueray catches hot fire, we will see the fad change from wii to ps3, and yes i mean as industry leader, ps3 has MUCH longer legs, and i dissagree with u saying the wii is the generation winner for 100 million, its still wayyyyy too early to tell…
and about that n4g thoughts… ur wrong, did u think it could be because most people know most ps3 exclusives / games ARN”T on pc where MOST 360 “exclusives” ARE so the dissagrees and agrees were just people agreeing with what false and agreeing with whats true…

@gameraxis - I have a launch 360 with component and I am outputting 1080p. Component CAN do 1080p, it’s just not all tv’s can accept 1080p through component. Now for movies, I can only upconvert to 480p over component. This may be what you were talking about. Also, my point to HHG is that when you sit down and play a game at someones house, you don’t know whether it’s HDMI, Component or SVGA unless they tell you. And since you can’t tell by looking at it, why make such a big deal about it? Now I’m all over HDMI for convenience and I know it’s better, I just don’t see the difference and I have a Samsung 650 TOC 1080p/120hz tv 46″.
Quality of games, quality of graphics and demographics of game players have nothing to do with whether or not the Wii is competing with 360 and PS3. You won’t ever see COD4 on the Wii because it can’t handle it. Just like you won’t see God Of War quality on the DS. But the DS and PSP are competing right? One system being more powerful than the other doesn’t mean they aren’t competing. The PS3 is technically more powerful than the 360. So should I just agree with HHG and say that the 360 isn’t competing with the PS3 because it’s not as powerful?

Good point on the PC games that are on consoles. I was just pointing out the fact that there are way more Playstation fans on N4G than 360 fans. It’s undeniable and hilarious. Still it’s my number one site to hit after mine in the morning.
you know what i noticed Torrence while i was on my trip i picked up a official playstation mag and it had like two advertisements for N4g other than on the internet thats the only other place i have seen that site advertised so maybe its more for the sony fans? i don’t know. But i do know its allot of xbox bashing and bullshit on there.

Hiphop: Calm down and take a deep breath when you talk. When you are too excited, your words are everywhere and makes it hard to follow. It seems that you have a harder time listening and paying attention to Torrence when you get excited. Again, calm down and drink some nice cup of hot tea.
Anyways, yes, the Wii and the PS2 are part of the competition. Both consoles are still being bought by the casual community. Why do you think SONY is still producing PS2 and PS2 games? Because it is still selling! Now, I know when you meant competition, you meant “league”. You are right. The Wii is not at the same league as the PS3 and the 360 when it comes to technology. I think and hope that is what you meant.
Lastly, just because a game is great does not mean you should buy it. There are over twenty games that I would love to own but it does not mean I should buy them all of them. In fact, buying one game every three to four months should be enough in my opinion. It does not make me a true gamer if I were to buy all the games I want. It makes me a poor consumer. There is a big difference.

I think your arguments of “competing” Wii vs 360 vs PS3 are interesting, but yes they do compete IMO. Taking an example of Hiphop racing a three year old, you’re looking at this wrong, imagine a race entirely of three year olds vs a race of adults, what you should be saying is which race will people pay their money to go see?
Thats what the console sales are about, yes technically they might differ, but it’s where people put their money down is what matters - for whatever reason they examine what is available and place their money on a system. Forget quality, which gives entertainment - if the three year olds running captures excitement and people will pay, if they can only afford one race per week, then yes it’s taking away sales of tickets to the faster adults races.
They compete, because everyone only has so much money, and if they choose to spend it on product A then that money is not going to product B - you could say music, food and iPhones also compete with consoles for cash. When someone has decided they want a game playing machine then direct competition comes into it, but every consumer product is essentially competing with everyone one else.

Good show guys I want to add my 2 cents on the Component vs HDMI debate you both are right on your point of veiws thats because the 360 came out a little bit behind the HDMI generation thats why the 1st XBOX360’s did not have an HDMI port so they were using the the component cables and was able to get a crisp clear picture when the PS3 came out we were in the HD era and Sony wanted consumersto get the best quality of picture so they wanted HDMI could be the only way you can get a great picture.
PS the PS3 looks simply horrible using component cables I bought a 40″ plasma the next day after I got my PS3 and the picture is simply beautiful.
Hiphop you have to know when to say uncle and submit Torrence made very valid points in his argument on whether the Wii was in competition with the PS3 and XBOX360 until this podcast I believed the Theory that Wii was not in the race but after listening to this podcast Torrence really shed some light on the situation when you look at it all 3 are home consoles and as long as the Wii is out there they will get casual gamers Woman, older people and children and as long as they are buying Wii’s the PS3 and XBOX360 just lost a sale. Now if your a hardcore gamer the Wii doesn’t appeal to you as much so you get a XBOX360 or PS3 but the Wii has Hardcore and casual gamers so they have a huge hold on the gaming industry.

HiphopGamer is right when he said technology-wise the wii is far less superior to the 360 and ps3 i think we can all agree with that however correct me if im wrong but i think Torrence was looking at it from a business standpoint and right now we all know the Wii is selling like hot cakes and we all know that Microsoft and Sony love money and right now the Wii is running away with the money that Microsoft and Sony want, they want it so bad and the evidence was layed out for everyone to see at E3 2008 when Microsoft was jumping around with that movie creator and the avatars and Sony let us see little big planet in more detail with imo a CASUAL new soon to be mascott in sackboy which the kids out there are gonna love. So i agree with torrence on the debate.
I have the PS3 and 360 and i love both consoles, i’ve played the Wii many times and i’ve had a blast on the Wii sports game and countless others but its just not my thing however i do respect Nintendo for being innovative and making it easier for people who wouldn’t normally take part in gaming to pick up play.
Anyways regardless everyone has and will have their own opinions on things and we must respect this but i think its up to the true gamers to stand tall and make sure the competition in the gaming world stays healthy and Torrence, HiphopGamer, Candid Anthony you guys are all doing a good job in helping the gaming world stay healthy with TheBitBag.

really, i was just pissed off / trying to get somebody’s attention. i was glad that torrence smashed hiphopgamer’s core philosophy for this generation which was the wii is not competing with the 360 and the triple. but then at the end of the conversation, he just comes back and throws hiphop a bone and says, yea, core gamers dont really care about the wii, thats why they come to this site, its all about the ps360. which is bullshit.

@angrypoolman - WAIT, let me clear up my statement with some added facts for you.
1. I’m a hardcore gamer. I don’t consider myself a hardcore gamer, I know I am. I bought a wii for my son and I play it with him.
2. The majority of people buying the wii are not hardcore gamers. It’s women, children and older people. BUT, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t hardcore gamers out there who bought one. Even if I didn’t have a kid, I would have eventually bought a wii just for the wii sports. I don’t think there is anything else worth spending money on for the wii. That’s just my opinion.
3. For the MOST part, and I’ll take this to the grave, hardcore gamers don’t care about the wii. I know plenty of hardcore gamers and I also get this sentiment across the internet. Most people who own a 360 and PS3 that are hardcore do not give a fuck about the wii. That doesn’t however, mean that there aren’t hardcore gamers who absolutely love the wii.
That’s an expanded explanation of my “hardcore gamers don’t care about the wii” statement. I bet you after Madworld comes out, more of these hardcore gamers will start playing the wii.

also there are a ton of games that are fun as hell that i havent even mentioned because i know a bunch of people would be like woah wtf thats not hardcore!

oh and not to mention the fact that theyre revolutionizing the industry. i know im making big claims here but i can back them all up 100%. microsoft and sony are ruining the fucking industry, and it pisses me off. and they have no reason to care either, its not like they depend on videogames to survive like nintendo does.
nintendo is more ‘hardcore’ than sony and microsoft could ever in their wildest dreams hope to be.
and for the record, this term hardcore is just stupid.

@angrypoolman - Dude, I stare at the Wii section all the time and I can’t find one game appealing to me. My son picked up SSBB and it’s exactly like the Gamecube version, which I loved. I have no interest in SSBB though. I’ll only play it with my son. Glad he spent his money on it. Mario Kart only gets played online. Graphics are the same as the GC version and all the maps from all the other games seem exactly the same.

What does hardcore gamer mean to me? A hardcore gamer or True Gamer is a person who buys all systems because they want access to all games. It’s that simple. A casual gamer will buy one system and a few popular games. It will collect dust, then they’ll sell it on ebay or craigslist and then buy the next big thing. Some casual gamers only play when they have company over.

ok torrence let me clear something up, the graphics on the wii are better than the gamecube. graphics are not nearly on the level as the ps3 and 360, but better than gamecube. seriously, look at smash on gamecube and look at smash on wii. same with mario kart, mario and metroid. zelda is the only game that has the same graphics. and that is because it was orignally a gamecube game.
so the wii is a step up graphics-wise from its predecessor. thats a good thing. but you act like its god or something. there is a world of difference from mario kart on wii and mario kart on gamecube. more of a difference than grand theft auto san andreas to grand theft auto IV. you are complaining that nintendo does the same thing over and over. gamers would have a FUCKING FIT if nintendo stopped making zelda games and stopped making mario games. and seriously, if nintendo pulled some shit like that, i would be done with them. yet when grand theft auto IV comes out, hiphop gamer nearly shits his pants. same with metal gear solid. these games are being remade because they are sucessful franchises and GAMERS WANT THEM. you think grandmas and babies are anticipating the latest zelda with 1:1 motionsensing? NO. i bet you that wii zelda will outsell both gears of war 2 and resistance 2.
microsoft and sony need to get off their asses and do something, and no im not talking about that shitty sixaxis bullshit. all they do is capitalize off of stuff that nintendo fucking started in the first place. well microsoft does. sony is at least just a little bit innovative.
I understand why franchises keep getting updated and shit, but I don’t like the Nintendo franchises. I don’t like the direction Metroid has taken. I don’t like Zelda, I haven’t enjoyed a Mario game since Mario 64 and lastly, it’s only my opinion. Only my opinion!

2006 - all we really wanted to do was slow the sales down of the ds, and i think we successfully accomplished that
2008 - the psp is not directly competing with the ds
same with nintendo, before the wii was released they said that their focus is not to compete with microsoft/sony, but at e3 2007 a lot of time was spent on how the wii and ds are kicking their asses in pretty much every aspect.
