There’s been a lot of talk about the pros and cons of developing on the 360 and PS3. A lot of developers are saying that PS3 is very difficult to program versus the 360. The PS3 has more space but most big games require installs. The 360 doesn’t require installs, which is cool, but the problem of disk space is coming to light. The real nitty gritty is whether or not the older 360 can still compete with the PS3 and also whether or not we’ll see a gap between PS3 games and 360 games in the near future.
As I was making my rounds at E3, I got a chance to talk to many developers. I tried my hardest to get developers to admit that the PS3 was a more powerful platform than the 360. I made sure not to talk to any developers working on exclusive titles, so all of the conversations I had were with developers working on multiplatform games. My first question was, “Do you see a big difference, in terms of power, between the PS3 and 360?” The response was, “Both platforms are equally powerful and you won’t see any difference in our games. The 360 makes it easy for us to utilize all of it’s power. The PS3 takes a bit longer because of the architecture, but in the end, we can get the same results on both platforms”
While I was waiting to get a hands on with another multiplatform title, I overheard some reporters questioning another developer about the same thing. They wanted to know if there was going to be a larger gap between the PS3 and 360 in the next couple of years because developers were finally learning the PS3. The developer responded, “Both systems are very powerful. With the 360 you don’t have to work to utilize all of its power. It’s just given to you. With the PS3 you have to work a lot harder to get access to its power.”
Another developer touched on the fact that they are taking advantage of both systems. He said,”While the architectures are different, you can take advantage of their strengths and at the same time create multiplatform titles that are basically the same.”
Now I have to tell you, just about everything I saw at E3 was visually better than anything I’d seen in the past year, even Metal Gear Solid 4. From what I had seen, it’s obvious that developers have a firm grasp on both the PS3 and 360. And while I’m at it, might I add that the PS3 is newer than the 360 and SHOULD be putting out better looking games. The 360 is a whole year older than the PS3 but still seems to keep up with it. I think that when you throw a new architecture at developers it’s to be expected that there will be hiccups. Since the first year of the PS3 we’ve seen nothing but improvements and it will keep getting better. It’s a great time to be a gamer.

The PS3 life cycle only lasts until the next console comes out and pushes them to make a PS4.

I have to disagree with you Kratos, I don’t think just because the ps3 has a blue ray means its going to have better graphics, yes it might have the capacity to have more content but still to this day i have not seen a game that has as much content and still looks good as oblivion. I don’t think you can name one game on ps3 that as as much as oblivion did. Metal gear looked good but cut scenes don’t count take those out and you have a 3 hour game. But every one wants to hail that as the best that ps3 has to offer. Then you take a game like call of duty 4 which is the best looking and playing shooter today and looks exactly the same on both consoles (had it on both). Its all a matter of who is developing, how long they have, and how good they are with the tools they have. Then does it matter if you have a blue ray when you have to install the games any way just for them to load at a decent time frame? In my honest opinion i have to agree with torrence and the developers there is no big difference in power what one lacks the other has and they play into each other. The only thing that i see the ps3 having an advantage in is that every console has a hard drive. I have owned and played crappy looking and playing games on both systems as well as great looking and playing games. Unless the developers are lazy, or don’t have the tools and knowledge needed then i don’t see multiplatform games looking better or worse on either console.
I like what you said candid cause i look at it this way. Why would i want to play a ps2 when ps3 is out? same for Xbox when 360 came out i wasnt thinking about my xbox any more i wanted to experience the new stuff. Just like if microsoft wanted to stop and put out their next system i most likely wouldnt be on my 360 as much any more because i got some new stuff. The ps2 in my opinion is still selling because some people cant afford to buy a next gen console, or they don’t feel the next gen is worth it to them. But you put 360 or ps3 at ps2’s price point ps2 will die almost instantly. what makes it so ironic is that if the said rumor is true about the 360 dropping price again then its soon on its way to taking the place of those ps2s in the living room. Because every one knows when consoles hit that sweet spot in price they sell like hotcakes. Its nice that the ps3 has a supposed 10 year life cycle but im not promised tomorrow so i want to think about whats going on now in the near future not 10 years from now. I didnt pay 600 for my system to reach its full potential 8 years from purchase did you?

I don’t really care as much as how the graphics look…as long as it looks better then PS2/PS1 games or looks good as most PS3/X360 games…(Can’t play anymore PS2/PS1 games because I’m so used to the current graphics..takes a while to get used to…but it’s like unplayable lol :’( )I’ll be happy.

Come on dude you cant compair a game thats out and been out to games that arent even out or close to being out and you or me have not played yet. You don’t know how long infamous is going to be or what issues it might have cause its not out yet, same with killzone2. Gta4 has a lot to do in it but it doesnt hold a candle to the amount of missions, and side quests you can do in oblivion, san andreas a bigger game than Gta4 doesnt even have as much to do as oblivion. With the texture issues i understand games now are getting better but even gta4 had its freezing and texture problems and when you look deep into it like that what game doesnt. I play alot of games and i still havent seen a game that can hold a candle to the content that is in oblivion so to say that 360 has reached its limit and cant compete is stupid when its first generation game still holds more content then the so called best ps3 game.

Without the rrod what can you really hold against microsft? its their second console and i remember back in the ps2 days sony had a big issue that they got sued over with the optical lens failure.The big difference here is that sony tried to deny it and tried to make you pay for it, mifrosoft acknowledged they had a problem and extended the warranty but no one wants to talk about that.

Let me toss two pennies into this pre-Warzone debate here.
1. Sequels of games should never destroy their prequels in graphics. Gameplay should make more leaps and bounds. Why do you think God Of War I and II look so much alike? Because they should. Take this same ideology and apply it to Gears Of War 1 and 2. They shouldn’t look different or play different but they should give you more of what you liked about the first game. Also, Cliff Blezinkski already said that Gears 1 and 2 do not max out the 360. Case closed on that one.
2. I’ve played Motorstorm 2 and like what I said above, it’s not leaps and bounds better than the first game. Take the first game which was in the desert and now stick it into the jungle. GT5P isn’t leaps in bounds better than GTHD graphics but the controls are light years better. Might I also add that Bioshock was a testament to what the 360 could do. Just buy it for your PS3 and when you first start the game you’ll shit your pants like I did LAST YEAR on the 360. Please don’t make me list other games which look incredible for the 360 cuz I’m tired of that shit.
3. Resistance 2 has that 300ft monster which is incredible!! I played the multiplayer and I wasn’t impressed graphically with the game. That’s not to say that the graphics aren’t good(see 300ft monster statement), but I compare it to the first game and it doesn’t look much different. It looks more colorful but not much different.
Lastly, why are we arguing about what we don’t know? KZ2 looks dope but it won’t get full credit from me unless the gameplay experience is as good as or better than COD4 and the multiplayer is as good as or better than COD4 and Halo 3. I’m already impressed with the graphics and so far what I’ve played is really good. I’m still holding my judgement til I can play it at home. Warzone starts soon, time to check my notes. Lots of good stuff to talk about tonight. It’s the LBP show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Warhawk is actually compressed down to 800mb. When you start the game, it decompresses whatever it needs into the main memory. I think that’s how it works.

just to let u know TORRENCE i highly disagree with u on ps3 graphic leaps.resistance 1 to resistance 2 has an insane increase in graphics.if u look at the 300 foot leviathon and all the deteal in that creature you will see HUGE leaps forward and the guns look 100x better in the 2nd one.ex.the assault rifle or the auger.same goes for killzone 2, it seems lifelike with all the enemies, the a.i, the weapons, the cover, the unique death animations etc… and come on where else can u run over other vehicles or trees with a monster truck.man i can’t wait for that game.i don’t like the comic book feel of infamous though.the gameplay looks cool though.ANYWAY IM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE WARZONE AND THE HIPHOPGAMERSHOW.

Kratos if i came off as trying to attack you im sorry i was just merely disagreeing with you. The part where i said why people can’t give microsoft their props was not aimed just at you but in general.
Now the whole point im trying to make with oblivion is i know it has its technical issues but as far as gameplay and content no game has came close yet. So my point is where is all this disk space going if games have not even come close to the content of oblivion. Metal gear waisted all that space on cutscenes to give us roughly 3 hrs of game play. If that is what i have to look forward to in my ps3 games then thats sad. I never said it wasn’t on ps3 it was just to show you that xbox has not reached its power and games in general have not reached full potential on either platform. I understand ps3 has great games coming out, and so does 360 but as of now i want gameplay im tired of running through games in two to three hours or after 1 day of rental. I want games like heavenly sword, uncharted,fable, jade empire,but longer, games like bioshock, masseffect, etc. So what im trying to say is we need more content in games not just pretty pictures, and movies to look at. Its not a ps3, 360 vs thing but thats what every one tries to make it when you defend or make a point about a system, just merely stating i want more content and graphics can stay the way they are now and ill be fine. We ask for too much out of games as far as graphics and now developers pay too much attention to that instead of gameplay.
