Warzone #2 - The Metal Gear Solid Show
by Torrence Davis
In this weeks episode we have a special guest, Ian Johnson. He’s an avid ‘True Gamer’ and Metal Gear fan going all the way back to the original MSX game. He’s here to tell us why MGS4 is so important to gamers, the industry and the series. After talking with Ian, we can’t see how anyone wouldn’t want to play Metal Gear Solid 4. Other highlights include:
- Will MGS4 break records and make an impact on the industry?
- Torrence Davis talks about the Japanese Ninja Gaiden 2 demo and how amazing it really is
- We compare the PS3 to the Sega Saturn in terms of it’s development difficulty curve
- Torrence and Hiphopgamer debate whether or not a Blu-Ray add-on for the 360 would be a hot item
- A new fanboy is awarded the Fanboy Of The Week award and he’s one of N4G’s finest
* Audio is low in the beginning for Ian Johnson. Turn up the speakers.
If you have questions and want them aired, please let us know. We are always looking for listener input. Enjoy the show!

Nice show, its my first time listenin, but i had to respond to something I heard on there about how a comment the host heard on N4G about how the xbox360 is holdin back the PS3 development. I think you can look at it in different ways, one way i look at it is , the xbox360 to me has some limitations such as how many things can be on the screen at once or how much it can push in general, and I think what the guy was sayin about GTA 4 being held back by the 360 was like saying if it were built for the PS3 ground up rockstar could have used that extra space, to have a bigger city or used that extra space to add more dialogue to the characters or animations etc etc, like for example i kinda laugh at it still today , when i played the first rainbow vegas on PS3 and i saw that paper mountain in the background, I just said this 100% a 360 game right here, I mean the city was flat, and to me they didnt really use the PS3 to well other than some sixaxis stuff. Other then that I think the podcast was great, I look forward to listening to the others.
Excellent show, as always guys. Hip hop, I’m gonna have to disagree with you on The Orange Box. I got that shit on my PC and it’s dope as hell. Especially Portal. I’m a massive nerd, so I dig puzzles, lol. In fact, anything that changes how you think about games is really cool with me. I understand you think it’s good as well, but not as good as Resistance? That’s questionable. Resistance was tight, don’t get me wrong but as far as games go, it was just a really well done FPS. Portal criss-crossed genres and didn’t suck. That’s worth of high praise, in my opinion. Personally, I think we’ll start seeing more and more FPS’s that will cross over into different genres and experiment with what you actually do in the game. FPS isn’t just for shooting anymore.
The volume levels were pretty off. I turned it up to hear Ian, but “punky-skunk” just about blew out my eardrums!
You asked why/what Metal Gear will do for gaming’s future, and why developers dont seem to copy it like say GTA. I think it’s to do with the fact it’s costly and requires talent to pull off something like MGS well. You might like Mozart, but it dosent mean you can compose something as well. It’s a big barrier to copy, and if you cant jump the barrier people will spot thats its a poor attempt, and that surely would put off devs from trying. Ideas do seem to filter out however, games with stronger story elements, more diverse gameplay for a particular action and so on. I can see MGS in games like Deus Ex or Bioshock.
Certainly the whole “Is it a movie or is it a game” does not work for a great many gamers, but those that want seriously strong literary gaming can only hope Hideo keeps on going!
Also i’d just like to point out that Tenchu Stealth Assassins is a “proper” stealth game, and came out before MGS1. I’m sure the stealth elements were already in place in MGS1, but we dont really know how Tenchu effected development, if at all.
Opps, forgot to actually say “good show” Cheers guys!
