So this story was posted on N4G.com(News 4 Playstation Fanboys), and I had to laugh because of the parents lack of knowledge of Xbox Live. If you have children and you’re gonna let them use Xbox Live, learn how to use it. Xbox Live is a haven for racism in games like COD4 and Halo. I’ve seen gamertags like “Niggerbeaters” on fresh accounts from the holidays. I’m sure they got reported several times and banned by Microsoft. Now if someone is sending nude pics through the Xbox Live mail system, that means they have an Xbox Camera. It also means that they are already on the friends list of victims account. Instead of shutting the Xbox 360 off they should have put the user on ignore and reported them to Microsoft so their account would get properly banned. Now the user is still free to roam Xbox Live because of the irresponsibility of the parents. Yep, I said it. They were irresponsible! They were more concerned about hiding said penis pics from their childrens eyes instead of finding a useful way to stop the predator.
The story isn’t bullshit but parents should know, anytime someone does something like this on Xbox Live, you can REPORT them to Microsoft. If you REPORT them, Microsoft can ban their Xbox Live account for good. This quote cracks me up:
Jennifer, Lansing Resident: “I immediately grabbed the X-Box controller from him, and I went ahead and turned it off. And then I went ahead and called X-Box live, and they told me there was nothing they could do about it. “
Of course the customer service reps at Xbox Live can’t do anything about it. They don’t know the gamertag of the individual that perpetrated the crime so what can they do? If someone steals your purse and you report it to the police, the first thing they will ask for is a description. If you didn’t see the guy or have no description, how can they possibly help you?
Here’s another incredibly stupid quote from the news reporter:
Video games are meant to be a haven mostly targeted towards children…
The demographic for Xbox 360 users is mostly males, 18-34 years of age. How’s that a haven for children? There are too many fucking stupid people in the media that sensationalize this bullshit.
There’s also a video link on the page with the story as it was broadcast. Guess what game box was sitting on the floor in front of the family’s Xbox 360? Yep, it’s that M-rated favorite, Halo 3. So not only does this woman not know shit about Xbox Live, she also lets her innocent children play M-Rated games where you get to kill people. Sigh…Here’s the news report from 6 News WLNS:
A Lansing mother was shocked after her two children were subjected to nude pictures on X-Box Live.
Michigan State Police say this disturbing crime should be a wake up call for parents.
Video games are meant to be a haven mostly targeted towards children but just like logging onto the Internet, state police say online games have become a magnet for sexual predators.
Detective Thomas Kish, Computer Crimes Unit: “Mom and dad don’t ordinarily think that there’s any danger in that and it is a potential danger and something that we all need to be concerned with.”
Jennifer says her two sons were the latest victims to an Internet crime.
Thursday night while playing a game on X-Box Live, a video game that allows you to play against people anywhere in the world, they were exposed to nude pictures sent from someone on the other end.
Jennifer, Lansing Resident: “I immediately grabbed the X-Box controller from him, and I went ahead and turned it off. And then I went ahead and called X-Box live, and they told me there was nothing they could do about it. ”
Jennifer now fears the safety of her children.
State police say a crime like this is exactly why parents should be aware of online video games.
Detective Thomas Kish: “X-Box Live in particular has video capability so you can see two-way video. It has the ability for text messaging, instant messaging back and fourth. The ability to receive voice messages, so it’s as much of a medium as your home computer and parents need to really be aware of that.”
And while Microsoft, the maker of X-Box, does give ways to deal with offensive players online, Jennifer says the damage to her children from this incident has already been done.
And she has banned her children from using X-Box Live to protect them from becoming prey to online predators.
