Sega AM2’s assistant manager Toru Murayama mentioned that the reason the online mode was scrapped on the PS3 version is because of time and budget reasons. However, it is possible to add online multiplayer modes to the PS3 version with an update patch. It is uncertain whether Sega will release such a patch.

It’s simple really.
Release a patch and I’ll buy VF5 for my PS3.
Don’t release a patch and I’ll continue waiting for Soul Calibur 4 which will have on-line play.
SEGA seems to have this strange aversion to taking money from people. Which is kind of peculiar since they are in the gaming business. :\
Probably because of they lost what they had so long ago with PSO. Capcom is happy with their FREE service of Monster Hunter and other games.
Well, I bet that they’re either waiting for some correct coding to be done or I don’t know. Online for VF5 seems like a lost cause to me now.
